It is 6 years old and has been growing in the ground for the last several years. Each spring i dig my trees up and severely prune the top and roots. I re-plant the trees and let them develop more branching and a thicker trunk through the summer. I have already removed several inches of spring growth and new roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot. I took a couple of pictures a couple of months ago when the tree was just starting to leaf-out to give you a look at the branch ramification.
Once they get growing the crown is so thick with lush growth that the branch structure is hidden. The tree is 11 inches tall with a trunk that is a little over 3/4 inch thick right above the soil line. You can place the tree in a finished pot now or plant it back in the ground to encourage a thicker trunk by fall.
It can also be grown in a training pot, use at least a 2 gallon size. Do not do any heavy pruning of the roots, which would put the tree into shock. I would plant it back in the ground and by next spring there will be much more branching for you to style.
The trident maple is a deciduous species that must be grown outdoors. It is hardy to zone 5. They are noted for their thick trunk, gnarly roots and small leaves that reduce well.
