This massive relative of the giant sequoia is widely grown as an ornamental tree and is a popular choice for bonsai. It is extremely prevalent in the darjeeling region of india where its light wood is prized as a building material. Japanese red cedar can reach 180 feet in height with a potential trunk diameter of 12 feet! Their wide spread, which can be as much as 35 feet, makes this species a good shade tree.
These evergreens are easy to grow and low maintenance with a fast rate of growth. They are considered suitable for growth in zones 5-9, or elsewhere as an indoor bonsai. Trees produce tiny cones with both male and female cones growing on the same tree. Seeds will benefit from cold stratification. Place your seeds in a moist medium such as paper towels, rockwool or sand and put them in the fridge for 3-4 weeks. After removing them from the fridge sow the seeds at a depth of ¼. Japanese red cedar can tolerate a wide range of soils but should ideally be grown in a well-draining fertile soil that is deeply tilled. It is best to grow the plants indoors or in a greenhouse until they becomes established, at which time they can be situated in full sun to partial shade.
