Pre bonsai bald cypress #236. It has no limbs, but will put out tons of new shoots – see last two photos. Where are the limbs? Trees with limbs seem to be more popular and i will have more in the future, but at this time of year, the bare trunk trees are easier to work with. Anyone who has grown bald cypress knows just how aggressively they sprout new limbs. I actually prefer to start with a blank canvas. It’s easier to pick and choose which limbs you allow to develop until you get just the right look, whereas existing limbs never seem to be exactly where you want them. New limbs are easy to grow, it’s the base you should focus on when choosing a tree. Bald cypress are easy to grow – they like lots of water, but require little else. These trees have recently been dug, the tops and roots cut back and are ready for a training pot. While it’s possible to go straight to a bonsai pot, you’ll get much better results if you spend a couple of years growing small feeder roots in a training pot while you style the top. You will want to use a less porous soil than you would for other varieties. Potting soil will work fine for the training pot. Bald cypress will do fine in full sun, but you will find it much easier to keep them moisturized in the shade. And don’t forget to give the top a nice quick shower as often as you can. They will do great grown in standing water, just don’t forget to treat for mosquitos. Bald cypress are very cold hardy – zone 4 find your zone here. But keep in mind that plants in pots are far less cold hardy than plants in the landscape, so i would protect them. Better to be safe than sorry. Keep in mind i spend all of about 2 minutes planting these trees for the photos. It’s just to help you visualize how the tree might look planted. I often get the soil level too high or too low and i usually leave roots that most likely need to be removed. Many trees will look great bare root and then when i review the planted photos, they look. I would encourage you to look closely at the bare root photos to see how you might improve the planted look. Looking for something in particular? So send me a photo or a description of the tree that you want to copy and i’ll start looking. The item “Pre Bonsai Bald Cypress #236″ is in sale since Monday, April 06, 2015.
