When it comes to working with bonsai trees, one of the things that I absolutely love is when I get an opportunity to take an old completed bonsai that has been allowed to overgrow and bring it back to where it should be. Especially when the newly designed tree is inspired by one of Masahiko Kimuras masterpiece bonsai trees. This rustic Prostrata juniper (Juniperus Chinensis Prostrata) looks like a very old tree because it is. The actual age and history of the tree can be found in the thickness of the trunk as well as the deadwood (Jin & Shari), which is clearly the focal point of the tree. As previously mentioned the canopy and foliage have been recently cleaned and re-wired. Because this tree was restyled from a strong windswept to a more balanced looking tree many of the secondary and tertiary branches needed to be re-wired, but the primary branches being already set did not require wiring. What this means for its new owner is, this trees canopy will be a show ready very soon. It does however require the new caretaker to continue the development of the canopies foliage. The sinuous trunk is also very impressive due to the thickness and. Texture that is rarely found in a tree this small. Any consider the Prostrata juniper to be one of the easiest junipers to work with because of its resilient ability to handle many environments. Overall, the composition of this Juniper conveys a tree that has lived its entire life by a seas side cliff and it shows in its natural beauty. The final photograph is a picture of the actual tree that we used as a template. It is one of the Masters (Kimura-san) trees that helps illustrate what your tree will look like after the canopy is fully developed. The pot that we chose to accompany this beautiful tree is equally pleasing. It is an old oval Japanese ceramic bonsai pot (12″x9″x3.5). May be slightly higher.
