We were hopelessly lost in. We were low on water and food and could not find the cache that we had stowed two days before. Half our group was ready to mutiny and turn back without seeing the famed Wollemi Pine in its natural environment and the other half insisted on persevering. The debate was turning acrimonious when we came around a bend and in the sweltering heat, saw a stand of 130 tall Wollemia nobilis flanked by a beautiful waterfall! They were simply magnificent and everyone was awestruck. Our collective mood shifted to reflective. Here were the trees, only a few dozen in number that had survived since the time of the dinosaurs, approximately thirty million years! The most beautiful palm in the world, Cyrtostachys renda is only hardy down to about 60F, and prefers the tropics. Easy to see why it is called the Lipstick palm, very few other palms show this remarkable orange red color to the crownshaft and petioles. It is a suckering palm and makes a elegant clump of spectacular color. The sealing wax palm is one the most spectacular and colorful tropical palms. Cyrtostachys renda is a clustering palm that features an incredible brilliant red crownshaft and petioles. Cyrtostachys renda is native to Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra where it grows in coastal peat swamps, sometimes reaching heights of over 30 feet. A slow growing species, it requires warm tropical temperatures and an abundance of moisture. It’s dark green leaves make an excellent contrast on it’s bright red crownshaft. Naturally clumping, however, these are recommended for indoors only or grown outside where temps stay above 60 degrees F. This tropical species requires high temperatures and high humidity and may not survive temps below 40°F. Plant in light shade and provide plenty of water if you are in a tropical area. Cyrtostachys renda grows well in both full sun or part shade. Tricky to grow, the sealing wax palm needs high humidity, well-drained soil, and is not tolerant of drought or wind. As they naturally grow in swamps, they are highly tolerant of flooding and can be grown in standing water. In cooler climates grow in greenhouse or conservatory. This palm is a must for collectors. EXOTIC PLANTS FOR SALE SUCCULENTS COLLECTIBLE VARIETIES SPECIES RARE. ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE SANSEVIERIA IN THE WORLD. Is a xerophytic CAM succulent native to a small region of Somalia near the town of Eyl. The species was collected in 1973 by John Lavranos. Is found only in a small region near Eyl. This region receives less than 100mm rainfall annually, which is unusually dry even among xerophytic Sansevierias. The air temperature in this region ranges between 22-35°C while the soil temperature is typically 24-27°C. Sansevieria eilensis roots showing thick underground rhizome directly below the leaves, and succulent white roots. The fine roots are dead and dry, but will be regrown once the plant is potted. Eilensis is a slow growing plant with rough, cylindrical, downward curving leaves which arise from an underground rhizome. A mature plant typically has 2 to 3 leaves, which are succulent and between 712 cm long and 1.9-2.5 cm thick. The leaves are typically a light bluish-green colour with regular bands of white. The leaves are also marked by several green longitudinal lines, marking areas where the leaf will fold in on itself during drought, or swell after watering. Leaves showing change in leaf morphology as the plant grows. Leaves are numbered 1 to 6 in order from oldest to newest. Leaf 3 has been removed to use for vegetative propagation. The leaves of S. Eilensis change morphology dramatically as the plant grows. Eilensis plants have a deep channel, which runs the full length of each leaf, and has reddish-brown margins edged with a papery brown cuticle. As the plant matures, the edges of newer leaves roll together to form a smooth cylindrical leaf with a dried papery cuticle at the tip and base of each leaf. Flowers are borne on a spike-like raceme approximately 30 cm long. Is rarely found in cultivation. The plant is extremely slow growing, and requires warm temperatures and bright light to grow, making commercial cultivation unviable. Limited cultivation of S. Eilensis using micropropagation has been successfully employed by collectors and enthusiasts, but as of writing, S. Eilensis is not available from any commercial sources. Like most xerophytic Sansevieria, grows best in porous, well-drained soil. Excessive watering will cause the fleshy roots to rot, so it is essential that the soil is allowed to dry sufficiently between waterings. Many growers prefer a coarse potting mix consisting of a combination of inorganic and organic ingredients. Gravel, perlite, vermiculite, and decomposed granite are commonly used to add weight and improve drainage, while bark chips and coconut coir or husks are used for moisture retention. Such a porous mix will prevent over watering and provide ample aeration, but requires more frequent watering to prevent over drying. A good piece for any collectors. Don’t miss this one. DESERT ROSE – BONSAI. The flowers of Adenium are perhaps the showiest of all succulents. BEAUTY SPOT The Desert Rose is drought resistant. Adenium Obesum or Desert Rose (Apocynaceae family) is a species of spectacular succulent native to tropical Africa and Arabia. The plant is a spreading succulent bush, two metres in height, with a thick, fleshy, twisted globose base that tapers gradually upwards, may be rigid and upright, with rather weak and spreading, short branches. The leaves are fleshy deciduous, crowded at the top of the branches. The curious form of the plant is further enhanced by some of the showiest flowers of all succulents, often borne in masses over a long season. The flowers are pale pink to deep red on the petal margins, always fading to near white towards the throat. The throat (floral tube) is white, sometimes with faint red nectar guide. The flower size averages about 6-7 cm (two inches) in diameter, but this is quite variable among clones. The Adenium is well adapted for growing in pots. Young plants of this variety have a small, ovoid caudex (woody base), and old specimens have large caudexes. Old plants, without any training, look like a bonsai. Despite their beauty and ease of culture, Adeniums are not nearly as popular as one might expect. Perhaps they simply haven’t received the exposure they deserve. Adeniums are drought-enduring and can survive for two months or more without being watered. Over flooding of the pot while watering may lead to rotting of the stem base and roots. The Adenium obesum is potentially semi-evergreen: if kept warm and well watered, plants will grow and often flower through the winter. Under such conditions they undergo only a brief leaf-drop and dormancy, usually a few weeks in spring or early summer. They are seldom attacked by insects, pests or micro-organisms.
