Bonsai Tree Collected California Juniper grafted with Itoigawa in Fine Ceramic Pot. Yamadori Collected in the Mountains! This tree is Not a Tanuki, but a 100% real California juniper grafted with Itoigawa! Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia. Is approximately 3.5 just above base. Height: Tree height from the soil line to the top of the apex is 18. Canopy: The canopy is well proportioned and measures 15 wide. Throughout the years of collecting trees, I have found that there are basically three types of Junipers one can collect- little young trees, big old trees and small, but old trees. The little old trees are the rarest and the hardest to find for bonsai. The reason the California juniper is so coveted is partly due to the spectacular deadwood that the tree can show. However, another aspect of a wild California Juniper that is difficult to find is a tree with perfect branching. One of the major problems with finding a small tree with perfect branching is that they are very rare and those that do exist are quickly collected. In the case of this tree, you see a small bonsai that has a nice developing canopy, but is much smaller than most trees at this stage. In my opinion, that makes this tree even more valuable than a bigger tree would be. This beautiful specimen was collected many years ago by a master bonsai artist in an area known as. Sand Canyon in the Tehachapi Mountains. After being collected the tree was allowed to recuperate before going through some drastic changes. The primary change that occurred was a decision to graft with Itoigawa foliage. Initially, the artist planned on keeping the trees original foliage, but after further consideration decided that it would be better suited with Itoigawa Shimpaku foliage. California juniper foliage looks fine on native stock, but can appear heavy and somewhat coarse for smaller size trees. For that reason it was decided to graft Itoigawa Shimpaku foliage onto the old and rustic California Juniper. The transformation was definitely worth the Itoigawa graft. The actual graft work was started over six years ago so the graft is very well established. The grafting technique that was used was a method known as an Approach graft. Approach grafting, is a technique where a new branch or section of a tree is added using a portion of another tree while still attached to the donor plant (during the grafting process). Eventually the only sign that a graft took place is the distinct difference between the California juniper and the Shimpaku bark, which can be seen in the photographs. Complementing the dramatic stature of the trunks deadwood as well as the entire composition is a round custom made ceramic bonsai pot (11×4). The artist who was commissioned to create this beautiful container was asked to make a bonsai pot that would complement the rustic appearance of the old trees deadwood.
