Approach graft is where a younger shimpaku tree is grafted onto an existing older tree by mating both respective scions together. If done correctly the graft will leave no visible signs of a graft ever taking place. The reason many graft the beautiful Shimpaku foliage onto Prostrata Junipers is due to the notorious slow growth of the Shimpaku. The wonderful thing about this tree is that you do not have to suffer through the slow growing process, which is the only downfall of owning a Kishu Shimpaku juniper. The Kishu Shimpaku, which the Japanese have recognized as one of the best trees for bonsai, has an amazing emerald green condensed scale foliage that is a pleasure to work with. The dramatic Deadwood as well as the entire composition is a rectangular Yixing ceramic bonsai pot with smooth edges (13x 10x 4.5).
