Ilex Shilling (Ilex Vomitoria’nana’). The photo shows the actual tree for sale. I really appreciate this trees symmetry and it has a classical bonsai appeal. There are several good fronts to this tree, I personally like it bending toward the viewer but even the prospective side shots are very interesting. This is a more advanced level tree that has had years of detail branch work done and is best for those who are very experienced. Some deadwood areas on the trunk have been filled in with cement and the scar tissue is beginning to roll over nicely. The plan was for no deadwood on this tree at all and the cement stops water from pooling and rotting the wood as Ilex are want to do. Ilex Schillings is a Florida native that produces excellent bonsai material. The small leaves and dwarf habit of this variety produce great character and proportion. Ilex Schillings are also very cold and drought hardy while withstanding serious root and top pruning making them great for bonsai cultivation. The dwarf variety typical is kept as a small hedge but with age can grow to over 10′. At one point in history, Ilex Vomitoria was a very popular tea; not to mention the weeping variety has more caffeine than coffee.
