The very beautiful Octagon root plate is a very nice little Japanese. At Feb/2018 repot this bonsai soil. Repot every year in spring, using a very well-draining soil mixture. Japanese zelkova is an excellent tree it is very beautiful in spring with leaves and you can also enjoy its bare branches after deciduous. Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata) is a deciduous tree native to Japan and China, is related to the Ulmus genus. The Zelkova is in fact quite similar to the Ulmus (the Chinese elm), Zelkova leaves are ovate, toothed and pointed. In the summer, the plant requires some protection from the sun, lest its leaves dry out. If you want the tree to drop its leaves for winter, keep the bonsai outside until they drop. Zelkova should be kept indoors at least during the winter. When placed outside however, protect the tree well during the winter. The tree prefers much light, not necessarily direct sunlight. Zelkova bonsai do not like too much water. It is best to water in the morning and let the soil dry out till next morning. During the hotter days of summer, it is recommend to spray water on the foliage to keep the tree cool and fresh. Water regularly as usual. Like other bonsais, Japanese zelkova must be watered frequently to ensure the soil never becomes completely dry. This may be up to twice a day during the summer and reduce watering in the winter. It is recommend not to over fertilize your zelkova bonsai. A balanced chemical fertilizer. The tree once or twice every month from spring till autumn. Do not fertilize if the plant’s leaves have dropped. Prune the Zelkova bonsai in early spring to maintain shape. Allow shoots to extend at least 3 or 4 nodes then prune back to 1 or 2 leaves. Larger-leaved Zelkovas respond well to leaf cutting (defoliation) in summer. Trim branches and stems with clean pruning scissors, and pinch back leaves with your fingers. The classic look for the Zelkova is a crown atop the trunk. Although it is a hardy tree, its branches are thin and fragile. Wiring should be done in the summer.
