Popular Name: Spiny Hackberry. Native from southern United States, to Argentina. Height from soil: 16.5 inches. Diameter at trunk base: 2 inches. Extremely rare bonsai species. I have never seen exhibited anywhere in California, in the past 20 years. I grew it from a seedling originated from a botanical garden in Los Angeles. It has mature bark, nice ramification. This is a semi-deciduous species in Southern California. The pictures show the tree in October, before it goes semi-dormant in late fall and winter. It has tiny leaves, and the branches naturally have lots of movement. The major wiring is already finished, the branches are set. Additional fine wiring would be needed for a more manicured look. The pot is a lovely blue-green, don’t remember the origin, but a favorite of mine. Perfect for this tree. I only have a limited number of this species. Once I sell a few, they will not be available.
