Height from soil: 11 inches. Diameter at the trunk base at the widest angle: 3 inches. Pot: 7 inches x 5 inches X 2 inches, oval, origin unknown. Age: over 46 years. It has been growing in container as bonsai material for 35 years (Roy’s father in law, according to him). In that regard, the tree has more refined features than the ordinary olive stumps, collected from California orchards. I’ve been working on it for the past 11 years. This dwarf variety has exceptionally small leaves, and tiny internodes. It was grown by the slowest method, which is, to grow it for decades in a nursery pot. But the result is superior to growing a trunk in the ground and then chopping it down. This tree has a slanting trunk, with strong movement to the right. The main feature is the very wide root-base (nebari), over 6 inches wide, which suggests great age in bonsai. The roots and lower trunk has old, mature bark, with some deadwood (shari) along the trunk. The crown has a spreading, natural style, characteristic to olive trees. There are no wires on the tree. Bonsai Japanese black pine shohin mame show ready 61 yrs old, A+++ tree. This little gem is in a stamped tokoname pot that is, 3.75×5 inches by 1.75 inch hight. The tree is 4 inches from the soil line and is 5.25 inches wide. It has a massive massive trunk that is 2.85, see photos. It was brought back from Japan over 35 years ago by my father. It was his pride and joy and would show it every year in the american bonsai club here in sacramento ca. He won several awards over the years ranging from best show in mame shohin class to members choice. It is the best shown mame red pine I have ever seen, it truly takes my breath away every time i see it. I have owned it for 5 years and have enjoyed working on it and viewing it. As can be seen the structure is amazing , achieve from decades of wiring. It also has the shortest needles I have ever been able to achieve on a red pine, or black pine as well. It has been repotted, decandled, pinched backh and fertilized at all of the apropiate times. I know the new owner will get the same gratification out of this prize tree that I have. Pitch pine Pre bonsai 20 tall in a Mica contaner native to east coast. This is a truly hardy tree collected 4 years ago can be overwintering with only minimal protection this species buds back easily so the potential for future transformation is endless. Aprox 20 tall from surface of contaner and. Approximately 17 + inches wide. Contaner mica container has lasted in cold winters for years no problem. This is not an indoor tree and or a (finished) bonsai other listings often state an easy tree for newbies this may not be true either. This pitch pine is part of a student bonsai class that l give throughout the year thus material accumulates that creates the need to sell to make room for other material. The main trunk and secondary are wired you can see (hopefully)The underlining shape Im trying achieve. The bonsai is healthy , winter protected.
