Shimpaku Raft style Saikei, planted in red rock sandstones. Saikei landscape arrangement, made from two 12 year old Shimpaku Junipers, in raft style, and a small Kingsville Boxwood. This Saikei Bonsai features two 12 year old Shimpaku Junipers grown from a cutting. They were originally wired 3 years ago into what is known as raft style. The two trees, once wired, were laid down and planted on their sides. The branches of each tree were wired and styled to become individual trees. The arrangements front tree is now a group of 4 individual trees, including the tallest tree. The back tree forms a group of 11 individual trees. The Trees roots run mostly under the stones. There are 3 groups of red rock Sandstone bonded together with a total of 14 stones, including a few smaller pieces scattered on the soil surface. The three groups of stone are wired into the pot. Repotted the spring of 2018, It shows great vigor and is now being pinch trimmed to maintain and create the tree form canopy. It stands 9 tall, from the bottom of the pots feet to the tallest trees top. Its planted in a Korean red clay high quality unglazed pot. This pot was chosen to accentuate the shape and colors of the stones. The pot measures approximately 11 1/2 x 8 and measures 1 5/8 from the pots lip to the base of its feet. This arrangement was inspired by the landscapes I was exposed to while growing up in the southwestern US. Every winter I wire a few trees to begin the process of creating something Id seen during those times. This is a good representation of one of those many special places where nature has presented a story of struggle and survival, thus beauty. The Flat Irons in Boulder Colorado were truly my inspiration for this saikei. I have tended this tree from its beginnings, as a cutting from its parent tree.
