Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, small size. Height: 12 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 7″ X 2″ Round, Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 1.5 inches. Species: Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, Popular name: Bright Bead Cotoneaster. This is a species native to China and the Himalayas. It is a spreading evergreen shrub, that used to grow in hostile, and mostly dry conditions. I bought this tree as a young nursery stock, about 10 years ago from San Gabriel Nursery, in San Gabriel, CA. During the first few years, I trained it in a nursery pot, and then, for the last five years, in bonsai pots. Cotoneaster, in general, is a fast-growing species, but it does not develop a large trunk, no mater how long is grown. It is hard to find material with trunks that have character. The unique attraction of this little tree lies in the lower part of the trunk, that shows deadwood. The other attraction is that the tree bears bright-read berries for over 6 months, every year. Right now, the berries are orange, because they are not quite ripe yet. They will turn darker red in about a month. The branches are nicely developed, and have no wires, except a small branch on the top right side. So, going forward, the owner can shape and further develop the branches, by the clip-and-grow method, using nothing but a bonsai scissor. The yellow/ochre round pot, from Dick Ryerson, nicely complements the tree, and allows it to be viewed from different angles. During the winter months, when most of the plants are dormant, here in the US, this tree, with its red berries, can brighten up the bonsai collection, and can also add to the Christmas mood, if you happen to celebrate that winter holiday. Overall, this is a beautiful little tree, and is ready to be displayed, as a small bonsai. It can be a great addition to the collection of both a beginner, as well as an advanced bonsai enthusiast. The cotoneaster is suited to all levels of bonsai knowledge, due to their versatility and forgiving nature.
