Japanese Flowering Apricot aka Prunus mume or Ume, have been popular in the East for thousands of year, we in the West are just starting to appreciate these beautiful trees and they are a wonderful trees to add to any collection. Ume are truly special. They flower in the middle of winter and have a wonderful almond scent. Their bark starts to develop a rough oak like texture at a young age. Name: acer platanoides / princeton gold. Sun exposure: full sun, sun to partial shade. Bloom color: pale yellow, chartreuse (yellow-green), pale green.

Bloom time: mid spring, late spring/early summer. Other details: average water needs; water regularly; do not overwater. Self-sows freely; deadhead if you do not want volunteer seedlings next season.

Fill a pot or other container at least 2 inches deep with a moist growing medium such as vermiculite, peat moss or moist sand. Place the seed approximately 1/4 to 1 inch deep in the medium. Put the pot with the medium and the seed in a refrigerator for 40 to 90 days until the seed begins to sprout. Move to a warmer environment, such as a warm window sill indoors, to increase germination once the plant begins sprouting. Plant the maple tree in a pot to create a small tree before planting outside, or plant the seed in the ground outside. Sow seeds on an area of well-drained topsoil and cover with approximately 3/8 inch to 1 inch of soil.
Water the soil until it is most and spongy but no standing water is present. Allow soil to dry out entirely before watering again. Note: some maple varieties take longer to germinate than others.

For instance, the norway maple typically requires 90 to 120 days to germinate. Plant multiple seeds in a single area, even if the intention in to grow only one tree. A single seed can become rotten or plant can get scorched, and the process would have to start over. Pull any additional trees from the ground before they become saplings.
