PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME OF THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN VERY RECENTLY, AND OTHERS, A MONTH AGO. THE BERRIES ON THE RECENT PICTURES ARE BRIGHT RED, WHILE THE ONES ON THE OLDER PICTURES ARE MORE ORANGE. Taiwan Firethorn, Pyracantha koidzumii’Santa Cruz’, medium size. Height: 17 inches; Width: 25 inches. Pot size 9″ X 8″ X 2.75 Oval, Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 3 inches. Species: Pyracantha koidzumii, Popular name: Taiwan Firethorn. This is a species native to Taiwan. It is a small tree, or shrub, growing to 13′ (4 meters). In the US, it was introduced to the southern states, such as Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, etc. In the colder climates, it should be grown indoors during the cooler months. I bought this tree as a nursery stock, about 20 years ago During the first decade, I grew it in the ground. Then it was transitioned to a nursery pot, and finally, in a bonsai pot for the past 5 years. This species is strong and vigorous, it needs re-potting every 2 or 3 years. The unique attraction of this tree lies in the contorted lower part of the trunk, that shows lots of movement. The other attraction is that the tree bears bright orange berries (that later become red) for over 5 months, year after year. Some of the branches have wires on them, to adjust the angle towards a more horizontal position. They should be left on until the middle of the next growing season. Once they are off, next year, the tree will be ready to be shown, during the fall and winter months, when the berries become the prime attraction of the tree. Going forward, the owner can shape and further develop the branches, adding more fine ramification. This will result in more berries in the future. The goal should be to create a taller and rounder apex. The yellow pot, from Dick Ryerson, nicely complements the tree, but a light-blue pot could also be a good fit. During the winter months, when most of the plants are dormant, here in the US, this tree, with its red berries, can brighten up the bonsai collection, and can also add to the Christmas mood, if you happen to celebrate that winter holiday. The Firethorn is a very popular and attractive bonsai subject, easy to grow for a beginner, or advanced enthusiast. This bonsai should not be too conformed to a tight and abstract shape, and instead, should have a more natural and casual look, to display the berries that grow in large clusters in the fall. During the late spring the tree is covered with clusters of snow-white flowers, so it can be displayed as a flowering bonsai as well.
