Desert Hackberry #2 (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) bonsai medium to small size

Desert Hackberry (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) – medium to small size. Height: 13 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 8 X 6.5 X 2.75 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the base: 2.5 inches. Species: Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala Popular name: Desert hackberry, Spiny hackberry, Tala. Depending on the water availability, this tree can take the form of a tall shrub, but can become a medium-sized tree. It’s native range is from Southern-Texas, all the way down to Argentina. Very rare bonsai species. I have never seen exhibited anywhere in California, in the past 22 years. Back in the late 90’s, I. Collected a few seedlings at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. I don’t think that the tree is there anymore. They were planted into my backyard, and grown there for 15 years. It is a semi-deciduous species, here in Southern California. It loses most of the leaves in winter, but not all of them. In a temperate climate, it’s probably best to take them indoors in winter. The branches have a natural zig-zag movement, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The bark has a nice light tan color, the scars will close up in a few years. To take this tree to the highest level, the fine branches need to be constantly pruned throughout the summer, until the pads gain more volume. Doing that, will also result in thicker primary branches. I would estimate, that in 3 years, under competent hands, this will be a gorgeous, show-ready tree. The colors of this tree create a light and happy feeling. In bonsai culture, the tree has no spines. When growing freely in the ground, it does develop some spines on the branches. After that, they won’t be available anymore. The tree has very fine roots, that results in a great root-base (nebari). It prefers heat, during the growing season, but the roots should not be let to dry out. Desert Hackberry (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) – Medium size. Height: 16 inches; Width: 18 inches. Pot size 9 X 7.5 X 2 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk/Root base (Nebari): 3.5 inches. The branches have a natural zig-zag movement, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The tree has very fine roots, that results in a great root-base (nebari). It prefers heat, during the growing season, but the roots should not be let to dry out. It is a more feminine, slender tree, with lots of open spaces. It’s well balanced, very nice root-base (nebari), and the trunk has great movement. I really like the gorgeous, shallow pot. I wish had more of them, it has a very unique, stylish look. The tree is styled in the neo-classical style, and looks more like a traditional bonsai tree. This is not a beginner tree, so I do not recommend it for somebody who is just learning the basics of bonsai. The work to be done to take it to the highest level, it needs advanced bonsai knowledge in the area of growing and developing branches. There are a few branches on the upper-half of the trunk, that need to be grown out and thickened. That will take a couple of years of cultivation and styling. Also, a lot of branches still have wires. Some of them (the thick ones) will have to come off this fall. These are on the primary branches. The small wires will have to stay on another year. The new owner will also have to add volume to the foliage pads. Once they fill up, with more ramified tertiary branches, and a couple of branches on the left side grow thicker and longer, the tree will take on a lush, and light-hearted appearance. HUGE ADENIUM ARABICUM’EMERALD CROWN’ with CERTIFICATE. A real collectors item! This huge arabicum’EMERALD CROWN’ is in a 24″ pot and about 27″ tall from soil line. Circumference of caudex is 39. Included is a certificate of authenticity from the grower in Thailand. A really nice one for Bonasi lovers. Gorgeous form, very nice skin, balance and branching. This needs at least a 24 wide pot. This is a big, heavy plant so it will require a big box. You will receive the exact plant that is shown in the pictures. SOME KEEP THEM, SOME DROP THEM. POTS ARE NOT INCLUDED. Arabicum and Thai Socos are fast growers with good cold tolerance down to 32 degrees. I have lots of seedlings and some really huge plants that I will be listing so keep checking back. Adeniums are native to Sahel regions, south of the Sahara from Mauritania & Senegal to Sudan and tropicaland subtropical eastern and southern Africa & Arabia. It is excellent in pots especially for people who kill everything because Adeniums live with very little care and can take a good deal of neglect. It will become larger, more interesting and more valuable every year with some attention. Most flowering occurs during the spring and fall in Florida, but flowering can occur any month of the year if it is in a warm, sunny location. Adeniums love warm weather and most drop their leaves and go dormant during the cooler months. Adeniums are easily brought inside and grown as houseplants during the winter months in cold areas and will even bloom if put near a sunny window or under lights or you can allow them to go dormant. Changes in temperature and or conditions often cause leaves to drop. Adeniums like plenty of light…. 4-6 hours of full sun and most appreciate some partial shade in the afternoon during the hot summer months in southern states to prevent sunburn of the caudex. 6 hours of full morning sun, then filtered afternoon sun is how I grow mine in Florida. Use a loose, well draining potting mix and water when almost dry. I use a mix of coco coir chips, pine bark fines or orchid bark mixed with some well draining potting mix composed of peat, compost, coarse river sand and wood chips. Time release fertilizer can be applied in the spring, then in winter, cut back on water and do not fertilize while they are dormant. Obesums please protect from temperatures below 45 degrees and arabicums below 32 degrees. Seedlings(first year) protect below 50. Every year or two lift the caudex a few inches. Gradually let the newly exposed, tender caudex that was under the soil adjust to the sun to avoid sunburn. Facebook also has many excellent adenium groups where you can get lots of valuable information. IN WINTER IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU TRACK THE PACKAGE AND BE THERE TO RECEIVE IT. LEAVING IT SITTING IN THE COLD OR EXTREME HEAT IN SUMMER MAY DAMAGE OR KILL THE PLANT. Standard takes from 5-7 days. However, if they do, more should replace them shortly after you pot them. Please be ready to re-pot your plant when it arrives and do not fertilize right away. Let them rest in their new soil in a shady or semi shady location for a couple of weeks. You can give them some Liquinox Vitamin B, Super Thrive and or Fox Farms Kangaroots in their water to give them a boost. If you have any questions, or need more photos, please feel free to contact me. NEW ADENIUM OBESUM DESERT ROSE MIXED OF TYPE10000 SEEDS FREE SHIPPING FRESH

DESERT ROSE – BONSAI. The flowers of Adenium are perhaps the showiest of all succulents. BEAUTY SPOT The Desert Rose is drought resistant. Adenium Obesum or Desert Rose (Apocynaceae family) is a species of spectacular succulent native to tropical Africa and Arabia. The plant is a spreading succulent bush, two metres in height, with a thick, fleshy, twisted globose base that tapers gradually upwards, may be rigid and upright, with rather weak and spreading, short branches. The leaves are fleshy deciduous, crowded at the top of the branches. The curious form of the plant is further enhanced by some of the showiest flowers of all succulents, often borne in masses over a long season. The flowers are pale pink to deep red on the petal margins, always fading to near white towards the throat. The throat (floral tube) is white, sometimes with faint red nectar guide. The flower size averages about 6-7 cm (two inches) in diameter, but this is quite variable among clones. The Adenium is well adapted for growing in pots. Young plants of this variety have a small, ovoid caudex (woody base), and old specimens have large caudexes. Old plants, without any training, look like a bonsai. Despite their beauty and ease of culture, Adeniums are not nearly as popular as one might expect. Perhaps they simply haven’t received the exposure they deserve. Adeniums are drought-enduring and can survive for two months or more without being watered. Over flooding of the pot while watering may lead to rotting of the stem base and roots. The Adenium obesum is potentially semi-evergreen: if kept warm and well watered, plants will grow and often flower through the winter. Under such conditions they undergo only a brief leaf-drop and dormancy, usually a few weeks in spring or early summer. They are seldom attacked by insects, pests or micro-organisms. An absolutely gorgeous bonsai. Grown from mixed seeds, I fell in love with the flower color but then after some repottings I started to notice the root formation. I just had to show it off. Planted on the soil surface it took a bit to catch on but is now growing strong. She’s good to stay in the same sized pot, move up to a slightly larger one or even have some of the soil knocked off and planted in a smaller pot. The photos of flowers were taken in June and then November of this year. She flowers at least 4 times a year for me here in Florida. Any questions, please ask.
