Desert Hackberry #2 (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) bonsai medium to small size

Desert Hackberry (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) – medium to small size. Height: 13 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 8 X 6.5 X 2.75 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the base: 2.5 inches. Species: Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala Popular name: Desert hackberry, Spiny hackberry, Tala. Depending on the water availability, this tree can take the form of a tall shrub, but can become a medium-sized tree. It’s native range is from Southern-Texas, all the way down to Argentina. Very rare bonsai species. I have never seen exhibited anywhere in California, in the past 22 years. Back in the late 90’s, I. Collected a few seedlings at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. I don’t think that the tree is there anymore. They were planted into my backyard, and grown there for 15 years. It is a semi-deciduous species, here in Southern California. It loses most of the leaves in winter, but not all of them. In a temperate climate, it’s probably best to take them indoors in winter. The branches have a natural zig-zag movement, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The bark has a nice light tan color, the scars will close up in a few years. To take this tree to the highest level, the fine branches need to be constantly pruned throughout the summer, until the pads gain more volume. Doing that, will also result in thicker primary branches. I would estimate, that in 3 years, under competent hands, this will be a gorgeous, show-ready tree. The colors of this tree create a light and happy feeling. In bonsai culture, the tree has no spines. When growing freely in the ground, it does develop some spines on the branches. After that, they won’t be available anymore. The tree has very fine roots, that results in a great root-base (nebari). It prefers heat, during the growing season, but the roots should not be let to dry out. Desert Hackberry (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) – Medium size. Height: 16 inches; Width: 18 inches. Pot size 9 X 7.5 X 2 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk/Root base (Nebari): 3.5 inches. It prefers heat, during the growing season, but the roots should not be let to dry out. It is a more feminine, slender tree, with lots of open spaces. It’s well balanced, very nice root-base (nebari), and the trunk has great movement. I really like the gorgeous, shallow pot. I wish had more of them, it has a very unique, stylish look. The tree is styled in the neo-classical style, and looks more like a traditional bonsai tree. This is not a beginner tree, so I do not recommend it for somebody who is just learning the basics of bonsai. The work to be done to take it to the highest level, it needs advanced bonsai knowledge in the area of growing and developing branches. There are a few branches on the upper-half of the trunk, that need to be grown out and thickened. That will take a couple of years of cultivation and styling. Also, a lot of branches still have wires. Some of them (the thick ones) will have to come off this fall. These are on the primary branches. The small wires will have to stay on another year. The new owner will also have to add volume to the foliage pads. Once they fill up, with more ramified tertiary branches, and a couple of branches on the left side grow thicker and longer, the tree will take on a lush, and light-hearted appearance. Additional services offered, free of charge. The item “Desert Hackberry #3 (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) bonsai Medium size” is in sale since Tuesday, July 16, 2019. Caucasian Hackberry (Celtis caucasica) bonsai medium to large size

Caucasian Hackberry (Celtis caucasica) bonsai medium to large size

Caucasian hackberry bonsai – medium to large size. Height: 21 inches; Width: 24 inches. Pot size 11.5 X 8.5 X 2.75 Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, Los Angeles potter. Trunk diameter at the base: 5 inches. Popular name: Caucasian Hackberry, Caucasia Nettle Tree. The natural forests of this species grow in the woodlands of South-East Europe (from Bulgaria, through Turkey, Afghanistan) and all the way to the Northern Himalayas. It’s a long-lived, medium size tree, with lush, round crown. According to some sources, it can live past 1,000 years. Eventually, it can reach 20 meters (60 feet) in height. The tree can withstand heat, as well as cold winters. But it needs a lot of sun, regardless of temperature. A gloomy climate, with no sun, is not ideal. In the fall, before the leaves drop, they display a beautiful, clear yellow color. Just like many other species I have, I collected the seedlings of this species from the Los Angeles County Arboretum, in the late 90’s. So, as far as I know, nobody has exhibited this species in California. I may be the only one who grows them, for all I know. They are wonderful bonsai subjects, easy to grow, and very vigorous. They grow constantly in the growing season, so it can be achieved a lot, in a single year. The primary structure of the tree is already set. All you need to do, is to work on the foliage pads, and the silhouette. The tree has a few thin wires, on some of the fine foliage. It has a very powerful root-base, and lower trunk. For the future, I envision a full, and more round crown. It can be done in no more than two years. This is a unique chance to acquire this species, that is extremely rare in bonsai culture. I will have 3 more that may be for sale in the future, and the rest will stay in my private collection. Please send me a message if you are interested. The tree is too large for mailing. So, if you live no further than Salt Lake City, Ut, or Meford, OR, or the South-West of the USA, I can take it to you, for the price of the gas. Spiny hackberry bonsai Celtis spinosa Tala Medium size

Spiny hackberry bonsai Celtis spinosa Tala Medium size

Popular Name: Spiny Hackberry. Native from southern United States, to Argentina. Height from soil: 15 inches. Diameter at trunk base: 2.25 inches. Extremely rare bonsai species. I have never seen exhibited anywhere in California, in the past 20 years. I grew it from a seedling originated from a botanical garden in Los Angeles. It has mature bark, nice ramification. This is a semi-deciduous species in Southern California. The pictures show the tree in October, before it goes semi-dormant in late fall and winter. It has tiny leaves, and the branches naturally have lots of movement. The major wiring is already finished, the branches are set. Additional fine wiring would be needed for a more manicured look. The pot has its own story. I got it from Roy Nagatoshi. A well known bonsai master in Sylmar, Calfornia. He was the consultant for the bonsai trees in the original Karate Kid movie. Roy did not want to sell this pot, he said that it was one of the pots used in the movie. But I convinced him after all. I love this pot, it has a very unique design. I only have a limited number of this species. Once I sell a few, they will not be available. Spiny hackberry bonsai Celtis spinosa Tala Medium size

Popular Name: Spiny Hackberry. Native from southern United States, to Argentina. Height from soil: 17 inches. Diameter at trunk base: 2.75 inches. Pot: 10″ x 6.75″ x 2 origin unknown. The main feature of this tree is the perfectly tapered, straight trunk. Once the fine foliage fills out the space in-between, this tree will make the impression of a stately, tall tree growing alone, in a park. It will look spectacular, but it needs another two seasons of fine pruning, to achieve that look. The base of the trunk is perfect from every angle. I only have a limited number of this species. BONSAI TREE HACKBERRY GROVE in OLD CLAY POT. Height: The height of the Tallest tree from the soil line to the top of the apex is 34. Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia, of the thickest trunk is 2 thick. Canopy: The canopy of the entire forest measures 29 wide. Nebari (Root Spread): Tree shows many exposed Roots 15. I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree! Most of the trees I sell are still a work in progress, but this wonderful Hackberry Grove is a completed Bonsai composition that is now show ready. It has never been shown anywhere until today. This forest represents some of the best material that we have to offer. Many of our specimen trees are long time projects that rarely go to market because we are not only purveyors of fine bonsai, but more importantly collectors. Most of the masterpiece bonsai trees that we eventually do sell were started by the original first generation Japanese American bonsai masters that Ive studied under here in the west coast. This composition in particular has been worked several times over the past years by experience bonsai masters to bring to fruition. The Chinese Hackberry is one of the most versatile trees in bonsai. Along with the Elm it is an ideal starter tree for beginners because it is easy to care for and resilient. It is also a perfect choice for the experienced bonsai artist because of the trees ability to challenge you in the design flow. Because the Hackberry can adapt quite easily too many different environments as well as resist many diseases makes this outstanding Grove even more attractive and suitable to any bonsai collection. For a grove that is only seventeen inches tall, this small giant shows a lot of seasoned character within the trees that only time can provide. Along with the outstanding composition the trees are also blessed with all the right ingredients to make this forest into a masterpiece if it isnt already. This is a Bonsai Grove that can be cherished for many years and if you like the pictures than I guarantee that you will love the Bonsai. Complementing the impressive spread of the grove as well as the entire composition is an old glazed blue ceramic bonsai pot.
