Pre-bonsai Acer ginnala, Amur maple. 14 yrs from seedling. 11″H 10″W, 1″ trunk caliper one inch above soil line, 3″ nebari. This tree has had some wiring and branch selection early on. It has 4-seasons of interest- fresh green spring foliage, saturated green summer color, intense crimson fall leaf color weather permitting, and a twiggy winter silhouette. I much prefer this seldom used species over the commonly used Trident maple for its fissured bark with age. , intensity of leaf color, fast healing of pruning wounds, and fast growth of trunk caliper and nebari. Amurs are much lower in price than Tridents for a tree of comparable quality- although I don’t think they need to be. This particular tree could be styled as an informal upright or its variants. It was last repotted in March 2020. This species characteristically has a sinuous trunk and well-placed primary branching. It is beginning to prepare for its winter dormancy, hence the pale colors of the leaves as nutrients are translocated to the roots.
