Please see fifth from last paragraph. This species offers attractive, silvery gray bark, fluted trunk bases, very twiggy growth, very short internodes and attractive, small leaves. There are two species of Korean Hornbeam; Carpinus turczaninowii and Carpinus coreana. Select, wire and grow all of the new branches that will sprout this coming growing season to form the limbs and apex. I have done some light, corrective root pruning this season on this plant and do not recommend doing any more this season. Wait at least one more growing season before doing more. Arrange and fix the roots in place when you pot it this season. Keep developing the nebari in the future by cutting long, thick roots shorter and allowing long, thin roots to run and thicken. Arrange and fix the roots in a radial pattern in the pot. Only do root work on healthy, vigorous trees. I leave lots of extra trunk on my trees even though they are mostly not useful. This gives the next artist choice in what they want to do witht the tree. It can be used to thicken the tree more, for thread grafting in the future, there may be a design possibility or you can just cut it off. I believe the plants will be fine even with extended time in transit. I wrap the root balls to keep them moist and I pack the trees in loose fill. The loose fill helps preserve moisture and buffers against extremes in temperature. The plant may sweat a bit in transit and try to sprout, especially in late winter. Pot the plant when you get it and put it in a sheltered place; especially if you live in a place with a real winter. The plant will acclimate and respond appropriately to its new environment.
