Pre-bonsai Acer ginnala, Amur maple. 14 yrs from seedling. 11″H 10″W, 1″ trunk caliper one inch above soil line, 3″ nebari. This tree has had some wiring and branch selection early on. It has 4-seasons of interest- fresh green spring foliage, saturated green summer color, intense crimson fall leaf color weather permitting, and a twiggy winter silhouette. I much prefer this seldom used species over the commonly used Trident maple for its fissured bark with age. , intensity of leaf color, fast healing of pruning wounds, and fast growth of trunk caliper and nebari. Amurs are much lower in price than Tridents for a tree of comparable quality- although I don’t think they need to be. This particular tree could be styled as an informal upright or its variants. It was last repotted in March 2020. This species characteristically has a sinuous trunk and well-placed primary branching. It is beginning to prepare for its winter dormancy, hence the pale colors of the leaves as nutrients are translocated to the roots. Pre-Bonsai Tree Yamadori Ponderosa Pine. Collected by Randy Knight in Spring 2019, Putting on great new growth for the second season. Will be ready to style in the fall of this year. Base is awesome with amazing shari. Trunk base is about 5.5 inches wide, tree is 24 inches wide, and about 23 inches tall. This tree will probably compress down to 15-16 inches. Pre-bonsai Acer ginnala, Amur maple, 14 yrs from seedling, H 7″, W 6″, 2″+ nebari, 3/4″ trunk caliper measured one inch above soil line. Amur maples have 4-seasons of interest, branch tracery in winter (deciduous), pinkish new spring foliage, saturated medium green leaves in summer and two-winged pinkish samaras when fruiting, and saturated deep crimson color in the autumn. I prefer Amurs to tridents for bark texture, intensity of fall color, ease of wound closing, and rapidity of nebari and trunk fattening and branch development. All the classical trident styles are appropriate for Amurs, including root-over-rock, multi-trunk (landscape specimens are mostly multi-trunked), informal upright, windswept, etc. Amurs are lower in price than a trident of comparable quality, because Amurs aren’t traditionally used for bonsai- they should be! Tree is just coming out of winter dormancy and starting to “move” and green up nicely.. This tree was imported several years ago and allowed to grow freely for the past 2 years. Can be refined greatly to make a nice bonsai. This tree was grown from cutting, wired with movement and grown in current container for at least a year.
