This tree has been growing in this pot for the past 6yrs, (the tree is about 15yo). The roots were trimmed in 2017 and is due another round. It is thriving as is, leaves reducing nicely, ramification developing well. The pot is 14”. The plant is about 18” tall. Trunk is around 2” diam. Ilex Shilling (Ilex Vomitoria’nana’). The photo shows the actual tree for sale. This Ilex is a very mature tree, it’s been in training for nearly five years and is an absolute beast. The tree will need styling and I would personally shorten or deadwood the right hand trunk (first picture). This tree is simply old and shows its age beautifully while having excellent taper. This will be an amazing Ilex for any collection. Measurements: Height: 17″ Width: 21″ Trunk Diameter: 8″ Nebari (root spread): 11″. This tree ships semi bare root – loose soil is gently worked away and the rootball is plastic wrapped. Keep outside only- full sun is best. Ilex Schilling is a Florida native that produces excellent bonsai material. The small leaves and dwarf habit of this variety produce great character and proportion. Ilex Schillings are also very cold and drought hardy while withstanding serious root and top pruning making them great for bonsai cultivation. The dwarf variety typical is kept as a small hedge but with age can grow to over 10′. At one point in history, Ilex Vomitoria was a very popular tea; not to mention the weeping variety has more caffeine than coffee.
