Shimpaku Raft style Saikei, planted in red rock sandstones. Saikei landscape arrangement, made from two 12 year old Shimpaku Junipers, in raft style, and a small Kingsville Boxwood. This Saikei Bonsai features two 12 year old Shimpaku Junipers grown from a cutting. They were originally wired 3 years ago into what is known as raft style. The two trees, once wired, were laid down and planted on their sides. The branches of each tree were wired and styled to become individual trees. The arrangements front tree is now a group of 4 individual trees, including the tallest tree. The back tree forms a group of 11 individual trees. The Trees roots run mostly under the stones. There are 3 groups of red rock Sandstone bonded together with a total of 14 stones, including a few smaller pieces scattered on the soil surface. The three groups of stone are wired into the pot. Repotted the spring of 2018, It shows great vigor and is now being pinch trimmed to maintain and create the tree form canopy. It stands 9 tall, from the bottom of the pots feet to the tallest trees top. Its planted in a Korean red clay high quality unglazed pot. This pot was chosen to accentuate the shape and colors of the stones. The pot measures approximately 11 1/2 x 8 and measures 1 5/8 from the pots lip to the base of its feet. This arrangement was inspired by the landscapes I was exposed to while growing up in the southwestern US. Every winter I wire a few trees to begin the process of creating something Id seen during those times. This is a good representation of one of those many special places where nature has presented a story of struggle and survival, thus beauty. The Flat Irons in Boulder Colorado were truly my inspiration for this saikei. I have tended this tree from its beginnings, as a cutting from its parent tree. Trunk Diameter: The average trunk Dia, of each trunk is approximately. Canopy: The canopy of the entire forest measures 24 wide. Bonsai is a style that seeks to emulate a tree that has fallen over due to a storm, breaking the branches on the downward side. Over time, roots develop from the trunk resting on the soil, and the remaining branches (rising vertically from the undamaged side of the trunk) grow to look like new trees connected by the old trunk. In bonsai, a one-sided tree is wired and laid horizontally on soil, branchless side down. By nicking the bark to expose the cambium layer on the underside of the trunk and dusting it with rooting powder, the growth of roots is facilitated. A straight trunk usually forms a straight line of trees; using a curved trunk creates a more interesting pattern of trees that resembles a small grove. For a grove that is only twenty seven inches tall, this small giant shows a lot of seasoned character within the trees that only time can provide. Along with the outstanding composition the trees are also blessed with all the right ingredients to make this forest into a masterpiece very soon. Ive noticed that not too many sellers talk or write about things that should be done after you receive your tree so I will give you my two cents worth. When you receive your tree unpack it carefully. Cut the tape and plastic wrap from the pot and the branches if applicable. Secondly give the tree a good watering and then put the tree in a partially shaded spot for a few days to allow it to adjust.
