BONSAI GARDEN OLD CAST FOO DOG with STRONG PATINA (Not Copper). This is a listing for an old and wonderful garden Foo Dog. Height: The height of the Lantern, but not including the hook is 29.5. Length: The length of the Foo Dogs body is 18 long. Width: The width is 12 wide. Weight: Overall weight 20 lbs. One thing I remember while completing my service in the U. S Navy while stationed in Yokosuka, Japan were seeing the beautiful Shrines and Temples. I also remember seeing the iconic statues of the dramatic foo dogs that adorned and protected the shrines. Foo dogs which are placed inside or outside a building are meant to protect your home or garden area from negative energy. It is said these guardian lions will stop anyone with malicious intensions from entering your home or space. In Japan Foo dogs are known as Komainu or Shshi and in China, Foo dogs are actually called Guardian Lions. The Chinese will most often refer to them as Shi which means lion. Luckily, we found this beautiful piece at a flea market when visiting San Franciscos China Town. The molded piece was made of a light weight. Fine casting plaster and then painted with an oxidized copper-based paint. As seen in the photographs, this beautiful Foo Dog has spent many years outside and has accumulated a strong patina on the surface due to its copper-based paint. Despite the visible oxidation, the piece is still very solid and in great condition. This is a very rare find in deed and it would definitely look great in any Bonsai or Zen garden. The Foo Dog can also make a great addition to those who collect these beautiful pieces or to give as a gift to someone who appreciates fine Asian vintage items. It is in overall good condition with no repairs, cracks, or chips, except for visible patina that occurred many years ago (as seen in the photos). Ships from Mission Hills, California.
