Oriental Sweetgum #1 (Liquidambar orientalis) bonsai large size

Oriental Sweetgum (Liquidambar orientalis) bonsai – large size. Height: 25 inches; Width: 24 inches. Pot size 16 X 13 X 4 Pot origin: Japan. Trunk diameter at the base: 4 inches. Popular name: Oriental Sweet Gum, Turkish Sweet Gum. The natural forests of this species can be found in present-day Turkey and Greece. I started this tree as a piece of root, that was discarded during a bonsai demonstration. I was at a Kofu-Kai bonsai club meeting in Orange County, California, in the fall of 1997. The legendary John Naka was there, doing a tree critique. There was also a demonstration held by Paul DeRose. He was working on an oriental gum, and cut off a large piece of root. I took it home, and planted in my backyard. After a few decades, this is how it looks. It is considered a large-sized bonsai, although it can still be handled by a single person. The design and most of the structure is already set. I did some fine wiring this spring, that will take care of the secondary and tertiary branching. I also re-potted this spring, so no need to do that for a few years. It’s a strong, vigorous, healthy tree. The future owner can improve it, by finishing the fine branch structure, which will add more size and volume to the foliage pads. In one or two seasons of fine pruning, this will be a show-stopper. Increasing the density of the foliage pads will also reduce the leaf-size considerably. Oriental sweet gum is a popular and well-liked bonsai subject. Please send me a message if you are interested. Nebari (Root Spread): Tree has many exposed Roots 4. Canopy: Widest part is 14 inches across. This Liquidambar (orientalis) works very well as a bonsai tree and it is extremely hardy. Although the tree is still developing the future branches, it already gives the appearance of strength due in part to its powerful posture. The autumn color that the tree displays in September makes it a very attractive specimen indeed. Most importantly, if you are a very busy person or live in place so arid that you must keep our maples trees on life support, then the Liquidambar is the tree for you. They produce reliable fall color without anything other than basic care. In short, this bonsai tree is an easy to care for deciduous tree that is blessed with a full developing canopy as well as a reliable show of fall color each year without a lot of effort. Complementing the wonderful tree is a beautiful rectangular Yixing ceramic bonsai pot (12×8.5×3.5). Nebari (Root Spread): Tree has many exposed Roots 5. Canopy: Widest part is 17 inches across. Works very well as a bonsai tree and it is extremely hardy. Its appearance of strength is due in part to its powerful trunk which has taken many years to create. The beautiful autumn color the tree displays in September makes it a very attractive specimen in deed. The tree was recently cleaned and shaped to help create a better silhouette and a softer branch pattern. Here in the San Fernando Valley we usually defoliate our deciduous trees in mid-July. Defoliation helps create fine branching in a short amount of time. It also redirects the energy within the branch pattern to improve the structure of the tree and as an added bonus the new foliage that appears is smaller and brighter in color. We only do a full defoliation if the tree is healthy and vibrant. BONSAI TREE SWEETGUM (LIQUIDAMBAR) in FINE TOKONAME-ICHIYU POT. Height: The height of the tree from the soil line to the top of the apex is 29. Most of the trees I sell are still a work in progress, but this Liquidamber is a completed tree that is now show ready. This tree represents some of the best material I have to offer. I have enjoyed watching this tree grow and mature into the fine bonsai specimen that you see now. Most of the masterpiece bonsai trees that I eventually sell were started by the original first generation Japanese American bonsai masters that Ive studied under here in the west coast. This tree in particular has been worked several times over the past years by experience bonsai masters to bring to fruition. This Liquidambar works very well as a bonsai tree and it is extremely hardy. Its appearance of strength is due in part to its powerful foundation (nebari) which has taken many years to create. This round Japanese pot represents some of the finest work that the Ichiyu Kiln has produced. On a side note. Ive noticed that not too many sellers talk or write about things that should be done after you receive your tree so I will give you my two cents worth. When you receive your tree unpack it carefully. Cut the tape and plastic wrap from the pot and the branches if applicable. Secondly give the tree a good watering and then put the tree in a partially shaded spot for a few days to allow it to adjust.
