Most of the trees that I sell are still a work in progress, but this Kishu Shimpaku Tanuki Juniper is a completed tree that is now show ready. It has never been shown anywhere until today. The tree represents some of the best material I have to offer. I have enjoyed watching this tree grow and mature into the fine bonsai specimen that you see today. Most of the masterpiece bonsai trees that I eventually sell were started by the original first generation Japanese American bonsai masters that Ive studied under here in the west coast. This tree in particular has been worked on several times over the past years by experience bonsai masters to bring to fruition. A Tanuki bonsai tree can best be described as combining the living and the dead to create a vision of beauty. American bonsai artist Dan Robinson coined the memorable phrase Phoenix Graft, which is based on a legend about a bird that flew into the sun, died and was reborn. In that same spirit, we decided to combine a magnificent piece of California juniper deadwood (natures art) with the beautiful Kishu Shimpaku juniper, to create an object of great beauty. Because this graft was done many years ago the live portion of the tree has completely fused into the dead portion and both pieces have become one. It is a marriage made in heaven! One of the most important factors in creating a high quality Tanuki bonsai is that you must first start with a tree that has great potential. Secondly, the person that is designing the tree must know what they are doing, because Masterpiece bonsai trees do not happen by accident. The proportions on this Kishu Shimpaku juniper are very attractive; in fact, I would say that they are ideal! Overall, the composition of this Shimpaku juniper conveys a tree that has aged gracefully. The beautiful curvature of the trunk and its branches gives one the impression of a tree that has spent all of its life on a windy mountainside. The old Bristlecone pine trees that outline the Sierra Nevadas were the inspiration for this tree. The tree has a pleasing composition that came to fruition through much thought, planning, but most importantly through time. Adding to the synergy of the powerful trunk as well as the entire composition is an old rectangular Japanese ceramic Bonsai pot that is also big (17×12.5×4). On a side note. Ive noticed that not too many sellers talk or write about things that should be done after you receive your tree so I will give you my two cents worth. When you receive your tree unpack it carefully. Cut the tape and plastic wrap from the pot and the branches if applicable. Secondly give the tree a good watering and then put the tree in a partially shaded spot for a few days to allow it to adjust.
