Bonsai Pot by Heian Tofukuji. Please check with the image. Size: 9.2 cm (left and right), 7.2 cm (depth), 3.2 cm (height). The deep-set lapis lazuli glaze gives a profound atmosphere. Fired in the ascending kiln period, the patterns created by changes in coloration due to changes in kiln temperature are also a gem with a deep flavor. A piece that shows such scenic coloration in lapis lazuli glaze is rare, and can be said to be one of the masterpieces of Tofukuji’s lapis lazuli glaze bowls. Although small in size, the stroking rectangular shape with riveted design is highly finished, and is a piece that one would like to match with a miniature meiki. This pot is made by the legendary Heian Tofukuji. Its a piece I picked up from the famous Yorozu en, the old Shohin nursery that specializes in fine pots and trees. The most trusted source in Japan To get high quality and authentic old pots. This piece was part of the famous Tagaki collection, a famous collector of trees and pots. He labeled all his pots in either silver or gold. Gold meaning they were a step above. Tofukuji died in 1970 and is the only man that a single book on bonsai pots was ever made about. He made his pots in other peoples kilns as he was to poor to own his own kiln. Using the leftovers of other peoples kilns, his pots are vast and varied when it comes to glaze and style. This pot is made by the legendary Heian Tofukuji. Its a piece I picked up from yorozu en in February of 19. Its a stunning piece, a blue glaze that he perfected and became so famous for (greens too). He died in 1970 and is the only man that a single book on bonsai pots was ever made about. He made his pots in other peoples kilns as he was to poor to own his own kiln. Using the leftovers of other peoples kilns, his pots are vast and varied when it comes to glaze and style. This pot is an early work of his. You can see the faint stamp, his trade mark upside down trident maple stamp, on the bottom of the pot. There is a small split from firing that happened during the making of this pot. Its around 70-80 years old. I was also told it was used in kokufu several times. During that era making a good rectangle was very difficult. So the pot is slightly wonky. To appreciate Tofukuji is to except the flaws and add them to the beauty of his works. What a great pot. Sorry its so expensive, I paid a lot. This is a stunning Pot Made By the man of Japanese bonsai pots, Heian Tofukuji. The only person whose ever had a book written just about his bonsai pots works and his career. I’ve owned this pot for over 10 years and still love it but wonder if someone else out there loves it as much or more than I do. I got it from the green club in Ueno park, outside of Tokyo during the kokufu ten show held each year for over 90 years. It’s considered a pear skin style pot by the clay body that was used and the pot size is what really makes this desirable…. Many in the world love Shohin Size trees and their pots but now a trend has gone to the next size up from Shohin, just slightly larger trees and pots. The size and shape and build of this pot make it really desirable around the world. Please understand that this pot is in excellent condition but it’s likely 50-80 years old may have some super small minuscule nicks here and there.
