Soil is made up of haydite, river rock, orchid bark and charcoal. Our soil holds water and nutrients for the roots. It is free draining and sufficient for the passage of roots, water, and air. This soil has been sifted to remove particles finer than 1/16 of an inch. The haydite hold 30% water and helps in the promotion of fine roots. Compacted soil will not contain enough air spaces to maintain healthy roots. If the soil becomes compacted the helpful bacteria will die off and promote root rot. River rock is superior to other materials often used in bonsai soil because the rock is rounded off by water and even after the soil has settled it won’t fit tightly together aiding in the prevention of compacted soil. Other soil mixes have too good of drainage that can potentially dry the roots out between watering and feeding. River rock has been rounded off by water. This round shape makes the soil not fit together well leaving air pockets. These air pockets are good for the roots and help against the soil compacting.
