Ginkgo biloba is a living fossil and one of the oldest species of tree to have survived from ancient times dating back to 150 million years, although it is now extinct in the wild. Highly prized as bonsai in china and japan, because of its beautiful leaves, which turn yellow in autumn, and because these trees can live to a great age. This tree has been trained in a flame shape, which is how they grow naturally. Were to keep them: hardy, requiring no special protection in winter. Benefits from partial shade during hot summer months. Repotting: every 3-4 years in early spring. This one can either be repotted or left alone for another 1-2 years. Pruning and pinching: prune old wood in early spring, before the new leaves emerge. Pinch out the growing tips of new shoots on the trunk and main branches when two or three leaves have formed on each shoot, continuing todo this throughout the growing season. Wiring: will not need additional wiring in this flame shape. Watering: regularly from spring to late autumn, and in winter keep the compost just moist. The foliage will benefit from regular misting in summer. Feeding: from spring to late summer apply a general fertilizer, changing to a low-nitrogen one for the last autumn feeds. Measurements are based on largest distance per section. ::the last picture is a sample of what this tree looks like in the fall:. Customer service is priority #1.
