With its ease and speed of scar healing (on a big trunk, large 3+ wounds heal within a year), and the resultant smooth gray bark, often without apparent marks, make for a very natural tree effect on every trunk. Small leaves, starting out bright red, and which turn a rich red color again in the fall, make for a beautiful effect through much of the year.
