Many can try to simulate the effects of old age by bending and jinning branches, but it is impossible to fake a massive trunk that is the result of many years of growth. This outstanding old Ficus is well on its way of becoming a very nice specimen tree. The interesting trunk with a lot of character and the gnarled exposed roots that collector’s desire is definitely the focal point of the tree, but this bonsai also has many other attributes. The excellent development of the primary branches and the ramification and growth of the foliage is a strong indicator of a very good root system. Unfortunately, that very same aggressive growth caused the branches to develop faster than expected so there is a bit of wire damage on the branches but they should heal over rather quickly. Complementing the impressive trunk as well as the entire composition is an old baby blue glazed ceramic bonsai pot (11″x3″). The soil that we used for potting the tree is known as “Boons” mix and the top soil is a mixture of Red Lava, and a few other secret ingredients.
