Bonsai Japanese Flowering Apricot

Prunus mume – Japanese Flowering Apricot. The ume is a favorite of the Japanese for bonsai and rightly so. Unlike other members of the flowering cherry family it is much less likely to die back when severely pruned. Its fruits are small. Its flower is small and very fragrant, and they come in many different colors. This one is white with a very slight pink blush. Hardy up into zone 6, it is also not very fussy about soil (likes well drained loam best), and with only a few pests, but not salt tolerant. It is also long lived. Many ume bonsai specimens in Japan are well over a century in age, and fast growing when young. These Are Seldom Found At This Size And Shape Anywhere Else In The Country.
