The photo is representational of our Japanese Black Pine starters currently in a 4 container. All our JBP starters have just been topped so that lower buds will grow out. This seedling will develop fastest if planted into a one (1) gallon container with a nursery grade soil mix that has pine or cedar bark in it. Our starters are mature enough to go directly into the ground but planting into a one gallon container first will ensure your transplant is successful. For young trees feed and water heavily to produce strong growth. Focus on needle plucking to develop good branch placement in the beginning stages. It is better to have two or three possible branches for a single place than to not have enough later in the development process. Measurements: approximately 9 tall. Ships semi bare root. Hardiness Zones: 5 -10. General Japanese Black Pine is an amazing species for bonsai cultivation. Japanese Black Pine are relatively fast growing and must be kept outside. While growing a Pine in the early stages of development they appreciate lots of feeding and water. Once a Pine has reached a high level of maturity the watering and feeding schedule will be adjusted to keep the needles as small as possible. Japanese Black Pine’s needles will greatly reduce with time and their coarse rough bark conveys a great sense of age and ruggedness. Pine work much differently than deciudous species of trees made into bonsai. Unlike a Juniper or many a broadleaved species, Pines cannot withstand large root reductions. JBP (Japanese Black Pine) are forgiving when removing needles and pruning the candles. A good rule of thumb is to always leave 10-12 pairs of needles on any individual branch to ensure it does not die back. Similar to Juniper, a Pine branch without any foliage will almost certainly die off. Root on Rock by Masahiko kimura sama. The item “Bonsai Tree, Japanese Black Pine, Pinus thumbergii, Live Tree!
