THIS IS A GREAT MISSION OLIVE THAT MEASURES 24 TALL OVERALL AND HAS LOTS OF HEALTHY NEW GROWTH. THE MISSION CULTIVAR TENDS TO HAVE RELATIVELY SMALLER LEAVES WHICH MAKE THEM IDEAL FOR BONSAI. I RECENTLY SET THIS IN THE SHALLOW TRAY, SO THE ROOTBALL CAN BE EXPOSED MORE OVER TIME. THIS HAS DISTINCT OLD GROWTH STRUCTURE, WITH TIME AND CARE THIS COULD BECOME A SHOWPIECE BONSAI. OLIVE TREES, OFTEN KNOWN AS THE PEACE TREE LOOK GREAT, ARE EASY TO CARE FOR AND ARE VERY HARDY. Olea europaea, is a species of a small evergreen tree in the family Oleaceae, native to the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean Basin. It is short and squat with silvery green oblong shaped leaves and the trunk is typically gnarled and twisted. It is very hardy: drought-, disease- and fire-resistant. Its root system is robust and capable of regenerating the tree even if the above-ground structure is destroyed. Olive trees grow in any light with good drainage. They like warm weather, but can withstand temperatures to -10 °C (14 °F). The older an olive tree is, the broader and more gnarled its trunk appears. Many olive trees in the groves around the Mediterranean are said to be hundreds of years old, while an age of 2,000 years is claimed for a number of individual trees; in some cases, this has been scientifically verified. Mission olive trees originated on the California Missions, though there is some disagreement over when the trees first appeared in California. Some say they were introduced in 1769 when seeds brought from Mexico were planted. Others site the date 1785 when trees were brought in to make olive oil. Check out my other items!
