Hand Made Bonsai Pot By Thor Holvila 2 Hand Rectangular Pot 20.2×15.2×6cm. About the edition “Kumatani” After returning from Japan and one month of working with Hidemi Kataoka in Tokoname I felt the urge to get back to basics, start from the ground with unglazed rectangles, skulls and roof tile red clay. What I brought back with me was not only new tools and new techniques, it was also a new approach to the art of pot making. Therefore I decided to put down a mark at this crossroad and move into the second generation of Thor pots. I therefore placed my chop in a blue rectangle that symbolizes my new found freedom in a limited space with clear borders. My universe to explore. This is also the first edition that is stamped with the chop that read in japanese Kumatani, which translates to Valley Bear A name I was given that describes my position in between the mountains of west and east. I therefore saw it fitting to name this edition Kumatani – Dalbjörnen. Edition: J anuary edition 2018 – Kumatani Design: Rectangle Clay: Roof tile red Glaze: Unglazed Fired: Fully vitrified frost resistant stoneware Outside measurements width: 200 mm / 8.1″ depth: 160 mm / 6.5″ height: 60 mm / 2.3 deep inside: 37 mm / 1.5. Thor’s comment: Returning to unglazed with this pot that has an aged feel and look to it. Incredible colours around the rim and sides from burnt ashes that crowns this pot made out of one block of roof tile red clay. Like most potters Thor Holvila began by making pots for his own trees. He started making pots for others in 2008. He graduated from Achillerska Art School in 1989, Thors father was a judo instructor and a goldsmith who taught him how to appreciate Japanese art and tradition, as well as the simplicity and stubbornness that was already in his childhood. Technology and the knowledge of kilns he received when he was an apprentice under-potter to Paula Lindors (Pioneer in the Swedish raku technique) As all good teaches she would question everything he did and above all she got him to work with larger sizes. She made him dare to put small tea pots aside and to build and think big. The only limitation is the size of the kiln. When making bonsai pots Thor likes to stick with simplicity, he stays with old techniques, simple tools and a few quality materials. This way he stays with in tradition and has a relationship with the original classical forms through tools and execution, while he inevitably puts him self into what he creates. Thor mixes most of his own glazes. Most of the time he stays with a simple palette, with just a few glazes and oxides and some different clays. The combinations and results are endless. Thor builds his pots by hand using slab, coil, and pinching techniques only. Unlike most people Thor prefers to wotk with clay when it is very soft. He used four local stoneware clays, Yellow clay from Skane, Black Lava clay from Bohuslan, Tile red and bone white clay from Denmark.
