All pots are fired to be frost proof and are suitable for outdoor use. Graham started out making his pots in around 2015. Unlike many potters Graham set out to make bonsai pots from the very start. He doesn’t consider himself a potter in the’traditional’ sense, he’s never made a cup or plate for example. He is particularly drawn to Nanban styles. Finding beauty in rustic simplicity, be this in bonsai tree design, old buildings or things broken down by nature. Graham prefers a simple shape, with marks that evidence the hand made process that created it. He tries not to hide this, preferring’makers marks’ to be seen and, not hidden. Pushing the clay around is what he enjoys the most, he tries to let the clay be itself, the way it cracks, tears or dents and then let that be the thing that visually sells the pot. Every tool makes its mark and the way the clay responds to this is what inspires a lot of his work. One of the key important aspects of a Nanban style pot is knowing when to stop, how to make it just enough, the phrase’less is more’ is quite close. How to represent the energy of the making, the feeling of movement or speed. The problem can be how to get a feeling of spontaneity into a pot that actually took a long time to make. Another theme of Graham’s work is often how nature has reclaimed man made things. Old industrial buildings, iron bridges, mine works. Rivets, sheet metal and industrial inspired texture are often featured.
