Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus bonsai small size

PLEASE NOTE THAT MOST OF THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN VERY RECENTLY, WHILE ONE OF THEM IS A MONTH OLDER. THE BERRIES ON THE RECENT PICTURES HAVE A BRIGHTER RED COLOR, THEN THOSE ON THE OLDER PICTURE. Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, small size. Height: 12 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 7″ X 2″ Round, Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 1.5 inches. Species: Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, Popular name: Bright Bead Cotoneaster. This is a species native to China and the Himalayas. It is a spreading evergreen shrub, that used to grow in hostile, and mostly dry conditions. I bought this tree as a young nursery stock, about 10 years ago from San Gabriel Nursery, in San Gabriel, CA. During the first few years, I trained it in a nursery pot, and then, for the last five years, in bonsai pots. Cotoneaster, in general, is a fast-growing species, but it does not develop a large trunk, no mater how long is grown. It is hard to find material with trunks that have character. The unique attraction of this little tree lies in the lower part of the trunk, that shows deadwood. The other attraction is that the tree bears bright-read berries for over 6 months, every year. Right now, the berries are orange, because they are not quite ripe yet. They will turn darker red in about a month. The branches are nicely developed, and have no wires, except a small branch on the top right side. So, going forward, the owner can shape and further develop the branches, by the clip-and-grow method, using nothing but a bonsai scissor. The yellow/ochre round pot, from Dick Ryerson, nicely complements the tree, and allows it to be viewed from different angles. During the winter months, when most of the plants are dormant, here in the US, this tree, with its red berries, can brighten up the bonsai collection, and can also add to the Christmas mood, if you happen to celebrate that winter holiday. Overall, this is a beautiful little tree, and is ready to be displayed, as a small bonsai. It can be a great addition to the collection of both a beginner, as well as an advanced bonsai enthusiast. The cotoneaster is suited to all levels of bonsai knowledge, due to their versatility and forgiving nature. Desert Hackberry #2 (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) bonsai medium to small size

Desert Hackberry (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) – medium to small size. Height: 13 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 8 X 6.5 X 2.75 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the base: 2.5 inches. Species: Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala Popular name: Desert hackberry, Spiny hackberry, Tala. Depending on the water availability, this tree can take the form of a tall shrub, but can become a medium-sized tree. It’s native range is from Southern-Texas, all the way down to Argentina. Very rare bonsai species. I have never seen exhibited anywhere in California, in the past 22 years. Back in the late 90’s, I. Collected a few seedlings at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. I don’t think that the tree is there anymore. They were planted into my backyard, and grown there for 15 years. It is a semi-deciduous species, here in Southern California. It loses most of the leaves in winter, but not all of them. In a temperate climate, it’s probably best to take them indoors in winter. The branches have a natural zig-zag movement, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The bark has a nice light tan color, the scars will close up in a few years. To take this tree to the highest level, the fine branches need to be constantly pruned throughout the summer, until the pads gain more volume. Doing that, will also result in thicker primary branches. I would estimate, that in 3 years, under competent hands, this will be a gorgeous, show-ready tree. The colors of this tree create a light and happy feeling. In bonsai culture, the tree has no spines. When growing freely in the ground, it does develop some spines on the branches. After that, they won’t be available anymore. The tree has very fine roots, that results in a great root-base (nebari). It prefers heat, during the growing season, but the roots should not be let to dry out. Chinese privet (Lingustrum sinense) Bonsai – Small Size. Height: 13 inches; Width: 16 inches. Pot size 10 X 7.5 X 2.25 Pot origin: China. Trunk diameter at the base: 3.5 inches. Species: Lingustrum sinense, Popular name: Chinese privet. The Chinese privet is a deciduous shrub, native to China, Taiwan, Vietnam. It is widely cultivated as bonsai, in China and Vietnam. In cooler climates, this tree can be grown as an indoor bonsai. I acquired this tree as a bonsai material, in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles, 10 years ago. It had a nice trunk, but I had to correct the strong S-curve, which is prevalent in low-quality bonsai. Also, I had to re-grow some of the branches. The tree has a strong directional growth towards the left. It has a thick lower trunk, with good movement, that creates the impression of age, and adds character. I wired some of the branches. They thicken very fast, so the wire should be taken off during the next growing season. The new owner should add more volume to the weaker foliage pads on the right side. This tree is constantly growing during summer, so it is easy to achieve a lush foliage pad during one season. This is a tree for a beginner bonsai hobbyist. It is easy and fun to work with. Chinese Elm, Cork Bark #2 (Ulmus parvifolia) bonsai medium size

Chinese elm, cork-bark variety, medium size. Height: 19 inches; Width: 19 inches. Pot size 11″ X 9″ X 2.5 Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 3 inches. Species: Ulmus parvifolia, Popular name: Chinese elm, cork-bark variety. This is a species native to East Asia (China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam), growing up to 60 feet tall (18-20 m). An extremely popular bonsai medium, due to its versatility, small leaves, and quick response to training. I bought this tree as a young nursery stock, about 20 years ago from San Gabriel Nursery, in San Gabriel, CA. Planted in the ground for over a decade, and then trained it as a bonsai for another decade. It is a deciduous species, here in Southern California. It loses the leaves in winter, but quickly re-grows them in early spring. In very cold climates, it can be grown indoors, during winter. The branches have small inter-nodes, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The bark is very corky and thick, creating the impression of great age. This is a gorgeous little tree, with balanced structure, and a light, playful appearance. The upward main branches add naturalness to the design, although the flat pads still look bonsai-ish. In order to look more natural, the pads need to be thickened and rounded, and the top part of the tree should be expanded, so that the final result is a rounded and lush apex. This is a fast-growing species, so the thickening of pads and the apex, should take no longer than a full growing season. Another great thing about this tree, is that both the front and the back views look equally good. You can see it for yourself. I had a hard time figuring out which one is the best view, when I took the pictures this morning. I re-wired the branches this past spring, but the wires should come off in about a month and a half, since this time of the year in California, the branches thicken very fast. But if the thickening is not quite as strong, then the new owner should take off the wires as soon as they start cutting into the wood, around mid-spring, next year. On a different note, if this tree will still be in my possession by next spring, by the time the wires come off, and the foliage fills out, the tree will appreciate significantly, both in appearance and value. The root-base (nebari) is very nice and strong, with a perfect structure. The tree has no scars whatsoever, and a great taper. The light-blue pot contrasts very well with the dark trunk, and the bright green foliage. Overall, this is a beautiful little tree, one or two years away from show-quality. It can be a great addition to the collection of both a beginner, as well as an advanced bonsai enthusiast. The great thing about chinese elms, is that they are suited to all levels of bonsai knowledge, due to their versatility and forgiving nature. And, as a bonus for those who live in colder climates, but like to enjoy bonsai in the comfort of their home, chinese elms don’t mind being grown indoors, as long as they get enough light.
