Hand Made Bonsai Pot By Thor Holvila Hand Size Rectangular 15.7 x 10.4 x 4.9 cm. About the edition “Vinter”. The cold holds a grip over the north and the days are short and dark. The colour palette is reduced to blue skies and white snow. At some places the dead grass from last year stands frozen in ochre and fox red. Of course it has had a huge influence on me and my work, as you can see in this latest edition “Vinter”. Thor’s comment: A painted version of my Nidhögg design, a bit playful. I like the root feeling of the dragons body. Edition: February edition 2018 – Vinter Design: Rectangle Clay: Bone white Glaze: partially painted Fired: Fully vitrified frost resistant stoneware Outside measurements width: 157 mm / 6.2 depth: 104 mm / 4.1 height: 45 mm / 1.8 deep inside: 31 mm / 1.2. Like most potters Thor Holvila began by making pots for his own trees. He started making pots for others in 2008. He graduated from Achillerska Art School in 1989, Thors father was a judo instructor and a goldsmith who taught him how to appreciate Japanese art and tradition, as well as the simplicity and stubbornness that was already in his childhood. Technology and the knowledge of kilns he received when he was an apprentice under-potter to Paula Lindors (Pioneer in the Swedish raku technique) As all good teaches she would question everything he did and above all she got him to work with larger sizes. She made him dare to put small tea pots aside and to build and think big. The only limitation is the size of the kiln. When making bonsai pots Thor likes to stick with simplicity, he stays with old techniques, simple tools and a few quality materials. This way he stays with in tradition and has a relationship with the original classical forms through tools and execution, while he inevitably puts him self into what he creates. Thor mixes most of his own glazes. Most of the time he stays with a simple palette, with just a few glazes and oxides and some different clays. The combinations and results are endless. Thor builds his pots by hand using slab, coil, and pinching techniques only. Unlike most people Thor prefers to wotk with clay when it is very soft. He used four local stoneware clays, Yellow clay from Skane, Black Lava clay from Bohuslan, Tile red and bone white clay from Denmark. Mission Fig, (Ficus carica) bonsai – small size. Height: 10 inches; Width, at the wides side: 14 inches. Pot size 9.5″ X 2.5″ (round) Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, Los Angeles potter. Trunk diameter at the root base: 4 inches. Popular name: Mission fig, Common fig, Edible fig. The edible fig is one of the first plants cultivated by humans. There are Neolithic village sites dated 10,000 years-old, by archaeologists, that have the remnants of this plant. It is a small tree that grows 7-10 meters tall (30 feet), with smooth white bark and frangrant leaves. It is a Mediterranean tree, widely cultivated in from Spain, through Italy and Greece, further into the Middle-East, from Arabia, Afghanistan, all the way to India. It was also introduced to California by the Spanish missionaries, and became very popular. Today, they are thousands of cultivars, grown for the delicious fruit. It is a deciduous tree. I collected this tree as a seedling, from the Los Angeles County Arboretum, 21 years ago. Planted into my backyard, and worked on the trunk for a decade and half. This species is very prone to growing multiple trunks from the spreading roots. Every year, new trunks sprout from the base, so it is easy to create a mutiple trunk bonsai, or small grove. So, I decided to create a more complex design, in the form of a little grove. The tree has five trunks, the fifth one is very young. Odd numbers are preferred in bonsai, so the fifth trunk was grown for this purpose. The trunks are of different age and size, and they are all connected by a common root base. The fascinating thing abut this fig, is that the leaf size in bonsai cultivation can be reduced by a magnitude of 100. The leaf of a large fig tree is as large as this whole bonsai (10 inches). As the grower develops more ramification, the leaves become increasingly small every year. One can see that this bonsai already displays smaller and smaller leaves, and they will continue to get smaller in the coming years. This is a charming little tree, and will quickly take on a much more mature look, the next couple of years. The Fig is a prolific grower, it can be pruned several time in a growing season. It can also withstand hard pruning, and sometimes this is necessary, to develop a dense branch structure. Otherwise, this species has a sparse and coarse ramification. It has a “sculptural” form, and the exquisite leaf shape is a beautiful accent that surrounds the trunk. The owner will also be rewarded with edible fruits, growing at the base of the leaves. In the initial stages of a bonsai, when the branches are cut back often, in order to develop a crown, the fruits will not appear. But as the crown become more dense, and the leaves and internodes become smaller, it will require less and less pruning, and the fruits will start growing, year after year. The tree is growing in a beautiful Dick Ryerson pot. It is a perfect match, for this tree. I cannot imagine a better fit. The Common fig is a very easy species to grow, and it is suitable for beginners as well. It can withstand dry conditions and poor soil. I made many mistakes during these years, but the tree kept growing in spite of all adversities. For some reason, it is one of my favorite species, to grow as bonsai. May be because of the simple design that has a strong character, and looks very natural. It is hard to grow a fig bonsai that does not look natural, which is a treasured trait. Famous Shohin Size Bonsai Tree Pot By Chazan And Tsukinowa Yusen 4 3/4

This Pot was made by Tsukinowa Yusen and the paint work was done by Chazan. A beautiful collaboration of two very famous deceased potters. Its a dual published piece thats in the Yusen/Kouzan book and its also published as part of the Kunio Kobayashi collection. A well documented and very famous piece of art. Long ago when the pot was worth little, it looks like someone cleaned it and some paint was removed. It shows the same way in the book as is does today and the book pictures are in excess of 20 years old. This is for the true collector of fine bonsai art pieces, its not meant to be used, for long, just for a show. Pots like this dont show up very often at all. Pot size, in inches. Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai medium size

Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai – medium size. Height: 21 inches; Width: 24 inches. Pot size 14″ X 9″ X 3 Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, Los Angeles potter. Trunk diameter at the root base: 5 inches. Popular name: Nepal Camphor Tree. A stately evergreen tree, growing up to 66 feet (20 m), native of Nepal, Bhutan, India, China, Malaysia. The leaves contain essential oils, and camphor – the substance used in Vix and other ointments to cure respiratory problems. It grows in high elevation tropical forests, and mountains, sometimes as high as 9,000 feet. I grew this tree from a seedling collected on our street, in Alhambra, CA. Most of its live I kept it in the ground, until it developed a large trunk. Developing into a bonsai wasn’t an easy task. As a tree, it is as tough as nail, and it forgives every mistake that one can make. But it was very reluctant to respond to bonsai techniques. At the end, though, I feel that the tree just “gave in” to bonsai training, and started responding better and better. Now it’s really “tame”, and its foliage is taking on the characteristic of a good bonsai. The challenge with Cinnamomum, is to reduce the internodes, and leaf-size. This can be done easier, when the branches are thicker, and then pruned back hard. When we do this, new buds develop everywhere, and those tend to produce higher quality foliage. But to get thick branches, one has to let the original branch grow freely. The problem with that, is that the more we let it grow, the longer the inter-nodes get. So, it’s kind of a Catch-22. The other challenge is, that if we don’t prune it the way it should be pruned, some branches will die back. This is characteristic of many fast-growing broad-leaf trees (such as birch, alder, etc), and the Camphor behaves the same way. To avoid that, younger branches need to be pruned back to places where a bud is forming, and we also need to distribute the energy of the tree correctly. Old and thick branches, on the other hand, can be pruned back hard. They do not usually die back. I already solved these challenges, and developed strong primary and secondary branches. The new owner will have an easier task, taking it from here. Once this bonsai passes a tipping point, and has enough well-ramified branches, it starts responding better to pruning. The inter-nodes are shorter, and the leaves are smaller. Going forward, one needs to be diligent in pruning the new foliage, and quickly removing any growth that shows long inter-nodes. It is potted in a Dick Ryerson pot that complements very well the tree. This is a tree for the adventure-seeker bonsai enthusiast. It is very common as a street tree in Southern California, and very rare, in bonsai culture. I feel that it could become a popular bonsai subject, if we learned more about the species, and how to train it as a bonsai. With age, it develops beautiful old bark, nice foliage, and can survive even the most common bonsai mistakes. I once tried to kill such a tree in my backyard, because it was in the wrong place, and I needed the space. I tried for two years, but the tree won, at the end. Trident Maple Acer buergerianum bonsai medium to large size

Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) bonsai – medium to large size. Height: 25 inches; Width: 24 inches. Pot size 14″ X 10″ X 3 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 4 inches. Popular name: Trident Maple. The trident maple is a medium-sized tree (20 to 60 feet tall), and originates from China, Taiwan, and Japan. It is widely used in the temperate regions all around the world, as a shade tree. It is a very popular bonsai subject, due to its beauty, and versatility. It responds very well to bonsai techniques, so it is suitable for beginners, as well as for experienced bonsai enthusiasts. This tree has a long history with me, and goes back to the time when I lived in Vancouver, Canada. Shortly after, I planted the seedling into the ground, and spent over a decade, creating the trunk that you see today. After I moved to California, I left the tree on it’s own in an abandoned garden, where it grew wild for several years. This was almost 30 years ago, and it is one of many trident maples that I started this way. The tree is grown in a “naturalistic style”, with rising branches and a round crown, just like a trident maple that would grow in nature. It has a powerful root base, and a nicely tapered trunk, with very few scars and no visible trunk-chops. The future owner can grow a stronger and thicker first branch (on the right side of the first picture), creating a much larger foliage pad. Or, it can even remove it entirely, thus creating the image of a taller tree. The blue Yixing pot is a very good fit for this tree, the nice blue glaze complements the lush green foliage very well. The ultimate challenge with this bonsai, is in creating a well-balanced, harmonious fine branch structure, so that the tree can be exhibited without foliage (as a winter silhoutette), as well as with foliage. Chinese Banyan (Tiger bark) Ficus microcarpa bonsai medium size

Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa – Tiger bark) bonsai – medium size. Height: 23 inches; Width: 25 inches. Pot size 13″ X 10″ X 2 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 6 inches. Popular name: Chinese banyan, Indian laurel. A giant tropical tree, native to India, Shri Lanka, Southern China, Australia, New Caledonia. It loves a humid atmosphere, but it can also tolerate cold temperatures, close to freezing (33 F or 0 C). The largest of the species is known to be on the island of Kauai, Hawai’i, and it is 110 feet tall. In the Buddhist and Taoist religions, many places of worship have large banyan trees. I planted it in my backyard, where it grew in the ground for about 7 years, while the trunk tripled in diameter. Then the development continued in various training pots, where the root work was the main focus, and creating good movement in the trunk. Finally, the fine ramification was achieved in the current bonsai pot, during the past 5 years. During the training process, my main goal was to create large, lower branches, with wide, undulating movements. Also, the nebari is developing fast, and the new owner can soon un-cover more root-base, to show off the beauty of the spreading roots. I like the angular, thick lower trunk, which has a somewhat un-conventional shape. It creates a focal point that attracts the attention of the viewer. The lowest branch has a large wire on it, which will come off in about a month. There are a few more wires, all of them have nearly served their purpose, they will be cut off soon as well. So, the tree will have a finished structure, with no wires on it. The foliaged pads need to be tightly pruned from here on. That will result in smaller leaves and very compact pads. During this season, the pads will become much more defined, and also the owner will have to create nice negative spaces between the pads. Right now, these negative spaces are not so defined, due to the fact the current pads were created last year, so they are still relatively young. But this species is a fast and prolific grower, and in one season a remarcable density can be achieved, with frequent and directional pruning. The red/brown pot nicely contrasts with the grey bark. It is very shallow, which makes the trunk look even bigger. Ficus bonsai is very easy to grow, as long as a warm environment is provided. Because of ease of cultivation, this species is suitable for beginners and experienced alike.
