Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus bonsai small size

PLEASE NOTE THAT MOST OF THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN VERY RECENTLY, WHILE ONE OF THEM IS A MONTH OLDER. THE BERRIES ON THE RECENT PICTURES HAVE A BRIGHTER RED COLOR, THEN THOSE ON THE OLDER PICTURE. Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, small size. Height: 12 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 7″ X 2″ Round, Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 1.5 inches. Species: Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, Popular name: Bright Bead Cotoneaster. This is a species native to China and the Himalayas. It is a spreading evergreen shrub, that used to grow in hostile, and mostly dry conditions. I bought this tree as a young nursery stock, about 10 years ago from San Gabriel Nursery, in San Gabriel, CA. During the first few years, I trained it in a nursery pot, and then, for the last five years, in bonsai pots. Cotoneaster, in general, is a fast-growing species, but it does not develop a large trunk, no mater how long is grown. It is hard to find material with trunks that have character. The unique attraction of this little tree lies in the lower part of the trunk, that shows deadwood. The other attraction is that the tree bears bright-read berries for over 6 months, every year. Right now, the berries are orange, because they are not quite ripe yet. They will turn darker red in about a month. The branches are nicely developed, and have no wires, except a small branch on the top right side. So, going forward, the owner can shape and further develop the branches, by the clip-and-grow method, using nothing but a bonsai scissor. The yellow/ochre round pot, from Dick Ryerson, nicely complements the tree, and allows it to be viewed from different angles. During the winter months, when most of the plants are dormant, here in the US, this tree, with its red berries, can brighten up the bonsai collection, and can also add to the Christmas mood, if you happen to celebrate that winter holiday. Overall, this is a beautiful little tree, and is ready to be displayed, as a small bonsai. It can be a great addition to the collection of both a beginner, as well as an advanced bonsai enthusiast. The cotoneaster is suited to all levels of bonsai knowledge, due to their versatility and forgiving nature. The item “Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus bonsai small size” is in sale since Monday, October 21, 2019. Desert Hackberry #2 (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) bonsai medium to small size

Desert Hackberry (Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala) – medium to small size. Height: 13 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 8 X 6.5 X 2.75 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the base: 2.5 inches. Species: Celtis spinosa, Celtis tala Popular name: Desert hackberry, Spiny hackberry, Tala. Depending on the water availability, this tree can take the form of a tall shrub, but can become a medium-sized tree. It’s native range is from Southern-Texas, all the way down to Argentina. Very rare bonsai species. I have never seen exhibited anywhere in California, in the past 22 years. Back in the late 90’s, I. Collected a few seedlings at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. I don’t think that the tree is there anymore. They were planted into my backyard, and grown there for 15 years. It is a semi-deciduous species, here in Southern California. It loses most of the leaves in winter, but not all of them. In a temperate climate, it’s probably best to take them indoors in winter. The branches have a natural zig-zag movement, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The bark has a nice light tan color, the scars will close up in a few years. To take this tree to the highest level, the fine branches need to be constantly pruned throughout the summer, until the pads gain more volume. Doing that, will also result in thicker primary branches. I would estimate, that in 3 years, under competent hands, this will be a gorgeous, show-ready tree. The colors of this tree create a light and happy feeling. In bonsai culture, the tree has no spines. When growing freely in the ground, it does develop some spines on the branches. After that, they won’t be available anymore. The tree has very fine roots, that results in a great root-base (nebari). It prefers heat, during the growing season, but the roots should not be let to dry out. Chinese privet (Lingustrum sinense) Bonsai – Small Size. Height: 13 inches; Width: 16 inches. Pot size 10 X 7.5 X 2.25 Pot origin: China. Trunk diameter at the base: 3.5 inches. Species: Lingustrum sinense, Popular name: Chinese privet. The Chinese privet is a deciduous shrub, native to China, Taiwan, Vietnam. It is widely cultivated as bonsai, in China and Vietnam. In cooler climates, this tree can be grown as an indoor bonsai. I acquired this tree as a bonsai material, in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles, 10 years ago. It had a nice trunk, but I had to correct the strong S-curve, which is prevalent in low-quality bonsai. Also, I had to re-grow some of the branches. The tree has a strong directional growth towards the left. It has a thick lower trunk, with good movement, that creates the impression of age, and adds character. I wired some of the branches. They thicken very fast, so the wire should be taken off during the next growing season. The new owner should add more volume to the weaker foliage pads on the right side. This tree is constantly growing during summer, so it is easy to achieve a lush foliage pad during one season. This is a tree for a beginner bonsai hobbyist. It is easy and fun to work with. Olive bonsai (Olea europaea) – Small-leaf variety. Height: 11 inches; Width: 11 inches. Pot size 8″ X 2″ Round; Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California potter. Trunk diameter at the base: 5 inches. Age: over 40 years; In training for 15 years. This is a medierranean tree, from Europe, but also Middle East and South Africa. California is its adopted home, but it is very prevalent around here. As a bonsai, it is very common in Calfornia, but they are usually created from old stumps. The uniqueness of this little tree, is that it was grown in a nursery pot from the beginning, and for a very long time. It has tiny leaves and even smaller internodes. This variety is highly sought after among bonsai enthusiasts, because of the superior quality of the leaves and small internodes. It was grown in a nursery pot, for many decades. I trained it for the first eleven years, as a much taller tree. But for some reason, I didn’t like the design, because I could not reconcile the massive trunk base with the rest of the tree. Then, one day, about 4 years ago, I had a revelation that completely changed the look of this tree. I cut off half of the trunk, and used a side branch as the trunk, to create a much smaller tree. And from then on, I loved the direction it was going. Today, it looks like a very promising bonsai. Some branches are still wired, but with olives, the wire shouldn’t stay on for more than 3-4 months. So, they should all come off this fall. Some call it a “Sumo-style” tree, because the massive trunk base. Sumo trees are supposed to create the impression of great age. Also, the lower trunk has some deadwood (shari) which adds character and interest. The lower trunk is the focal point of the design. A week ago I planted it into this Dick Ryerson pot, and it’s a perfect match. I see too often olives planted into dull pots, instead of colorful ones. I love how this pot brightens up the whole image and makes the tree look much bigger than it is. In the future, the foliage needs to become fuller and rounder. All you have to do, is to cut back the new shoots to the first pair of leaves, and the foliage will double in about two years. It’s a prolific grower. The item “Olive bonsai (Olea europaea) small-leaf variety small size Sumo-style” is in sale since Monday, May 27, 2019.
