BONSAI TREE KISHU SHIMPAKU JUNIPER in TOKONAME POT. Height: The height of the tree from the soil line to the top of the apex is 20. Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia, is approximately 1.5 inch. Nebari: The generous root-spread is 6 across. When designing a bonsai one of the things I always try to accomplish is to tell a story with the piece that is being created. A successful bonsai must be more than just a tree planted in a pot. The tree should always generate some kind of emotion for it to be a successful composition. In short, bonsai should always be like a silent poem and a three dimensional painting which brings and adds peace to our lives. In the case of creating this bonsai the negative space was as important as to where we decided to place the branches. In order to create this composition everything that was not necessary was removed. As most of you know, the Shimpaku Juniper is a very slow growing tree and for that reason, many will graft Shimpaku foliage to different variety of Junipers that grow much faster i. San Jose or Prostrata Junipers. This Shimpaku is not grafted, it is 100% authentic Kishu Shimpaku Juniper. The Kishu portion attests to the lush green growth of the foliage. The trunk does show very nice movement, but the foliage scale is the part of the tree that is the most impressive. The reason I claim this, is due to the amazing emerald green condensed scale foliage that the tree is beginning to show. Many consider the shimpaku juniper one of the most pleasant trees to work with because of its soft foliage and this one is in deed a very beautiful little tree. Complementing the elegant trunk as well the the entire composition is an old Japanese Tokoname Kaiyou ceramic bonsai pot (13.5x 11x 4). The pot does show a very small chip on the edge of the lip.
