The purple sand (zisha) clay for which this area is famous is mined in the Yellow Dragon Mountains at Dingshu Town. Contrary to its name this clay comes in a brownish purple, a yellow and a red clay. This is the same area in which many of the antique Chinese pots so revered in Japan were produced. Over the last 30 years bonsai pot production has expanded in this area, with many of the master potters and kilns producing pots to rival the famous Tokoname kilns.
