The primary reason why we graft White pine to Japanese Black pine is due to the fact that the JBP have a much stronger root system than your typical White Pine and it provides a more stable root structure for growing JWP in more hot, humid regions. It also allows the tree to live a lot longer, making it a treasure of a lifetime. We also get a very dramatic fissured cork trunk with the Mikawa Black pine that is never seen on a White Pine. Furthermore, with a Mikawa black pine the grafted areas will blend so well that you will no longer see where the graft took place. Nevertheless, the tree should go to an area that gets cold winters because the foliage still requires a dormant period.
