Amur maples have 4-seasons of interest, branch tracery in winter (deciduous), pinkish new spring foliage, saturated medium green leaves in summer and two-winged pinkish samaras when fruiting, and saturated deep crimson color in the autumn. I prefer Amurs to tridents for bark texture, intensity of fall color, ease of wound closing, and rapidity of nebari and trunk fattening and branch development. All the classical trident styles are appropriate for Amurs, including root-over-rock, multi-trunk (landscape specimens are mostly multi-trunked), informal upright, windswept, etc. Amurs are lower in price than a trident of comparable quality, because Amurs aren’t traditionally used for bonsai- they should be!
