15-yr Old Shohin, Slant-style Flowering Cotoneaster Bonsai in LandWater Pot

15-yr Old Shohin, Slant-style Flowering Cotoneaster Bonsai in Water Pot. Cotoneaster (small, but not the tiny leaf variety). Trunk Caliper: 1.25. Imported, scalloped, blue-grey bi-colour, glazed ceramic water pot. This bonsai has been in training for the past 9-years. This bonsai is a hands-on workshop tree from the 2012 California Shohin Convention, at which time the stock was 5-7 years old. The tree was subsequently grown in the ground for the following 7-years to allow the trunk to thicken up and a good branch structure to develop. As a result, it features a thick, canted, slant-style trunk with fantastic movement and a thick and lush, dark green canopy supported by a pleasing, tapering branch structure. Every second year, the tree features a stunning display of tiny, scalloped edge, bell-flower blossoms, which eventually transition as the seasons progress into red-orange berries. Easy to care for, it can keep its style and shape just with fall and spring “pinch to trim” prune and repotting every third year with fresh bonsai soil. This tree thrives outdoors with protection from strong winds. It is cold-hardy and thrives in virtually any part of North America. Water whenever the soil is no longer moist (but NEVER allow it to dry out completely) fertilizing once a month with Miracle-Gro during spring and summer months. PLEASE NOTE THAT MOST OF THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN VERY RECENTLY, WHILE ONE OF THEM IS A MONTH OLDER. THE BERRIES ON THE RECENT PICTURES HAVE A BRIGHTER RED COLOR, THEN THOSE ON THE OLDER PICTURE. Bright Bead Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, small size. Height: 12 inches; Width: 13 inches. Pot size 7″ X 2″ Round, Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 1.5 inches. Species: Cotoneaster glaucophyllus, Popular name: Bright Bead Cotoneaster. This is a species native to China and the Himalayas. It is a spreading evergreen shrub, that used to grow in hostile, and mostly dry conditions. I bought this tree as a young nursery stock, about 10 years ago from San Gabriel Nursery, in San Gabriel, CA. During the first few years, I trained it in a nursery pot, and then, for the last five years, in bonsai pots. Cotoneaster, in general, is a fast-growing species, but it does not develop a large trunk, no mater how long is grown. It is hard to find material with trunks that have character. The unique attraction of this little tree lies in the lower part of the trunk, that shows deadwood. The other attraction is that the tree bears bright-read berries for over 6 months, every year. Right now, the berries are orange, because they are not quite ripe yet. They will turn darker red in about a month. The branches are nicely developed, and have no wires, except a small branch on the top right side. So, going forward, the owner can shape and further develop the branches, by the clip-and-grow method, using nothing but a bonsai scissor. The yellow/ochre round pot, from Dick Ryerson, nicely complements the tree, and allows it to be viewed from different angles. During the winter months, when most of the plants are dormant, here in the US, this tree, with its red berries, can brighten up the bonsai collection, and can also add to the Christmas mood, if you happen to celebrate that winter holiday. Overall, this is a beautiful little tree, and is ready to be displayed, as a small bonsai. It can be a great addition to the collection of both a beginner, as well as an advanced bonsai enthusiast. The cotoneaster is suited to all levels of bonsai knowledge, due to their versatility and forgiving nature.
