Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) – medium size. Height: 15 inches; Width: 17 inches. Pot size 10.5 X 2.75 Round; Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 3 inches. Popular name: Yaupon holly. Native of South-East United states, this small tree was used by the Native Americans to make tea for certain ceremonies. The Europeans incorrectly assumed that the tea caused vomiting, hence the name. Vomiting was part of the purification ceremony, but it was NOT caused by the tea. Did you know that this is the only plant native to North America, that contains caffeine? Yaupon holly is dioecious, meaning that there are male, and female individuals, based on the flowers they bear. This plant has male flowers. Right now, it is covered with small white flowers, with yellow center. The owner tore up the hedge on his front-yard, and trashed the whole thing, to replace it with new plants. I picked it up, it was dry and roots exposed. Wasn’t sure whether or not it was dead or alive. Luckily, it came back to life, and after working on it for 13 years, this is how it looks. This is a finished bonsai, if there is ever one. All the structure is set, down to the fine ramification. It has one wire, to adjust the angle of one branch, but it should come off this year. The overall silhouette can be modified, to the taste of the new owner. It is one of my favorite trees. I was planning to keep it for my permanent collection, but I realized that if I want to create more and more new trees (and I have more than I can count, coming up), I cannot keep everybody. Time is limited, and every tree I maintain, takes away time from the ones that are coming up behind. But it’s a special tree, and needs an owner who can appreciate the character and strength of this little tree, and knows how to take care of it. Please send me a message if you are interested.
