Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai medium size

Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai medium size

Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai medium size

Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai medium size

Nepal Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum glanduliferum) bonsai – medium size. Height: 21 inches; Width: 24 inches. Pot size 14″ X 9″ X 3 Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, Los Angeles potter. Trunk diameter at the root base: 5 inches. Popular name: Nepal Camphor Tree. A stately evergreen tree, growing up to 66 feet (20 m), native of Nepal, Bhutan, India, China, Malaysia. The leaves contain essential oils, and camphor – the substance used in Vix and other ointments to cure respiratory problems. It grows in high elevation tropical forests, and mountains, sometimes as high as 9,000 feet. I grew this tree from a seedling collected on our street, in Alhambra, CA. Most of its live I kept it in the ground, until it developed a large trunk. Developing into a bonsai wasn’t an easy task. As a tree, it is as tough as nail, and it forgives every mistake that one can make. But it was very reluctant to respond to bonsai techniques. At the end, though, I feel that the tree just “gave in” to bonsai training, and started responding better and better. Now it’s really “tame”, and its foliage is taking on the characteristic of a good bonsai. The challenge with Cinnamomum, is to reduce the internodes, and leaf-size. This can be done easier, when the branches are thicker, and then pruned back hard. When we do this, new buds develop everywhere, and those tend to produce higher quality foliage. But to get thick branches, one has to let the original branch grow freely. The problem with that, is that the more we let it grow, the longer the inter-nodes get. So, it’s kind of a Catch-22. The other challenge is, that if we don’t prune it the way it should be pruned, some branches will die back. This is characteristic of many fast-growing broad-leaf trees (such as birch, alder, etc), and the Camphor behaves the same way. To avoid that, younger branches need to be pruned back to places where a bud is forming, and we also need to distribute the energy of the tree correctly. Old and thick branches, on the other hand, can be pruned back hard. They do not usually die back. I already solved these challenges, and developed strong primary and secondary branches. The new owner will have an easier task, taking it from here. Once this bonsai passes a tipping point, and has enough well-ramified branches, it starts responding better to pruning. The inter-nodes are shorter, and the leaves are smaller. Going forward, one needs to be diligent in pruning the new foliage, and quickly removing any growth that shows long inter-nodes. It is potted in a Dick Ryerson pot that complements very well the tree. This is a tree for the adventure-seeker bonsai enthusiast. It is very common as a street tree in Southern California, and very rare, in bonsai culture. I feel that it could become a popular bonsai subject, if we learned more about the species, and how to train it as a bonsai. With age, it develops beautiful old bark, nice foliage, and can survive even the most common bonsai mistakes. I once tried to kill such a tree in my backyard, because it was in the wrong place, and I needed the space. I tried for two years, but the tree won, at the end. Trident Maple Acer buergerianum bonsai medium to large size

Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) bonsai – medium to large size. Height: 25 inches; Width: 24 inches. Pot size 14″ X 10″ X 3 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 4 inches. Popular name: Trident Maple. The trident maple is a medium-sized tree (20 to 60 feet tall), and originates from China, Taiwan, and Japan. It is widely used in the temperate regions all around the world, as a shade tree. It is a very popular bonsai subject, due to its beauty, and versatility. It responds very well to bonsai techniques, so it is suitable for beginners, as well as for experienced bonsai enthusiasts. This tree has a long history with me, and goes back to the time when I lived in Vancouver, Canada. Shortly after, I planted the seedling into the ground, and spent over a decade, creating the trunk that you see today. After I moved to California, I left the tree on it’s own in an abandoned garden, where it grew wild for several years. This was almost 30 years ago, and it is one of many trident maples that I started this way. The tree is grown in a “naturalistic style”, with rising branches and a round crown, just like a trident maple that would grow in nature. It has a powerful root base, and a nicely tapered trunk, with very few scars and no visible trunk-chops. The future owner can grow a stronger and thicker first branch (on the right side of the first picture), creating a much larger foliage pad. Or, it can even remove it entirely, thus creating the image of a taller tree. The blue Yixing pot is a very good fit for this tree, the nice blue glaze complements the lush green foliage very well. The ultimate challenge with this bonsai, is in creating a well-balanced, harmonious fine branch structure, so that the tree can be exhibited without foliage (as a winter silhoutette), as well as with foliage. Chinese Banyan (Tiger bark) Ficus microcarpa bonsai medium size

Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa – Tiger bark) bonsai – medium size. Height: 23 inches; Width: 25 inches. Pot size 13″ X 10″ X 2 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 6 inches. Popular name: Chinese banyan, Indian laurel. A giant tropical tree, native to India, Shri Lanka, Southern China, Australia, New Caledonia. It loves a humid atmosphere, but it can also tolerate cold temperatures, close to freezing (33 F or 0 C). The largest of the species is known to be on the island of Kauai, Hawai’i, and it is 110 feet tall. In the Buddhist and Taoist religions, many places of worship have large banyan trees. I planted it in my backyard, where it grew in the ground for about 7 years, while the trunk tripled in diameter. Then the development continued in various training pots, where the root work was the main focus, and creating good movement in the trunk. Finally, the fine ramification was achieved in the current bonsai pot, during the past 5 years. During the training process, my main goal was to create large, lower branches, with wide, undulating movements. Also, the nebari is developing fast, and the new owner can soon un-cover more root-base, to show off the beauty of the spreading roots. I like the angular, thick lower trunk, which has a somewhat un-conventional shape. It creates a focal point that attracts the attention of the viewer. The lowest branch has a large wire on it, which will come off in about a month. There are a few more wires, all of them have nearly served their purpose, they will be cut off soon as well. So, the tree will have a finished structure, with no wires on it. The foliaged pads need to be tightly pruned from here on. That will result in smaller leaves and very compact pads. During this season, the pads will become much more defined, and also the owner will have to create nice negative spaces between the pads. Right now, these negative spaces are not so defined, due to the fact the current pads were created last year, so they are still relatively young. But this species is a fast and prolific grower, and in one season a remarcable density can be achieved, with frequent and directional pruning. The red/brown pot nicely contrasts with the grey bark. It is very shallow, which makes the trunk look even bigger. Ficus bonsai is very easy to grow, as long as a warm environment is provided. Because of ease of cultivation, this species is suitable for beginners and experienced alike. Chinese Elm #6, Cork Bark Ulmus parvifolia Corticosa' bonsai medium size

Chinese Elm, Cork-Barked (Ulmus parvifolia “Corticosa”) bonsai – medium size. Height: 25 inches; Width: 20 inches. Pot size 13″ X 10″ X 2 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 3 inches. Popular name: Chinese elm, Lacebark elm, Cork-bark Chinese elm. This graceful tree is a native of Estern Asia – China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam. It is a medium-size tree, can grow up to 65 ft (20m). The wood of Chinese elm is very hard, so it’s used for manufacturing tool-handles, and various furniture types. It is so popular, that the species now is grown everywhere, around the world. The original Chinese elm has a smooth and flaking bark, but in the bonsai community, a new North American sport, with corky bark, became popular. This bark becomes evident after the tree reaches 8-10 years. I grew it in my backyard at least 10 years, before training it in various training pots. It has a double-trunk, sometimes it is called mother-child. The second trunk is much shorter, hence the “child”. The main trunk is rather straight, but with suble movements, that makes it interesting and lively. I like this desigh a lot, because it suggests the image of a very tall, and mature tree. It also has a natural and light feel to it. I call this style “naturalistic”, because it does not have the traditional “bonsai” look. It’s a special tree, overall, and I will have a very hard time parting with it, when the time comes, because of the unique design. The red Yixing pot is beautiful, and perfect fit for the tree. The chinese elm is an extremely popular bonsai species, for both beginner and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. The most imporant challenge, is to keep pruning it as it grows, so that the correct proportions are not lost. Also, the energy throughout the crown should be evenly distributed. If some branches (especially on the top portion) are allowed to grow too fast, this could cause the weaker branches to die back. To avoid that, a rigorous pruning of strong branches is required. In colder climate, winter protection is recommended, although the chinese elm can easily withstand temperatures below freezing. Also, the dormancy period is very short, they are the first one to leaf out in the spring. Because the short dormancy period, they can also be grown indoors, but with plenty of light. I can deliver it, for the price of the gas. The item “Chinese Elm #6, Cork Bark Ulmus parvifolia Corticosa’ bonsai medium size” is in sale since Friday, April 24, 2020. This bonsai is designed in the “slanting style”, with a trunk that has a dynamic movement with lots of small curves. The lower trunk has already developed a deeply fissured, old bark. It has a great branch distribution, and the branches are not too crowded, so the tree will be easy to maintain with pruning. Some of the primary and secondary branches still have wire on them, they should set and come off by mid-summer. This tree is a very prolific grower, so the foliage pads should become significantly larger and denser this year. The red/brown pot nicely contrasts with the dark grey bark.
