Chinese Elm #6, Cork Bark Ulmus parvifolia Corticosa' bonsai medium size

Chinese Elm, Cork-Barked (Ulmus parvifolia “Corticosa”) bonsai – medium size. Height: 25 inches; Width: 20 inches. Pot size 13″ X 10″ X 2 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 3 inches. Popular name: Chinese elm, Lacebark elm, Cork-bark Chinese elm. This graceful tree is a native of Estern Asia – China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam. It is a medium-size tree, can grow up to 65 ft (20m). The wood of Chinese elm is very hard, so it’s used for manufacturing tool-handles, and various furniture types. It is so popular, that the species now is grown everywhere, around the world. The original Chinese elm has a smooth and flaking bark, but in the bonsai community, a new North American sport, with corky bark, became popular. This bark becomes evident after the tree reaches 8-10 years. I grew it in my backyard at least 10 years, before training it in various training pots. It has a double-trunk, sometimes it is called mother-child. The second trunk is much shorter, hence the “child”. The main trunk is rather straight, but with suble movements, that makes it interesting and lively. I like this desigh a lot, because it suggests the image of a very tall, and mature tree. It also has a natural and light feel to it. I call this style “naturalistic”, because it does not have the traditional “bonsai” look. It’s a special tree, overall, and I will have a very hard time parting with it, when the time comes, because of the unique design. The red Yixing pot is beautiful, and perfect fit for the tree. The chinese elm is an extremely popular bonsai species, for both beginner and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. The most imporant challenge, is to keep pruning it as it grows, so that the correct proportions are not lost. Also, the energy throughout the crown should be evenly distributed. If some branches (especially on the top portion) are allowed to grow too fast, this could cause the weaker branches to die back. To avoid that, a rigorous pruning of strong branches is required. In colder climate, winter protection is recommended, although the chinese elm can easily withstand temperatures below freezing. Also, the dormancy period is very short, they are the first one to leaf out in the spring. Because the short dormancy period, they can also be grown indoors, but with plenty of light. I can deliver it, for the price of the gas. The item “Chinese Elm #6, Cork Bark Ulmus parvifolia Corticosa’ bonsai medium size” is in sale since Friday, April 24, 2020. Chinese Elm, Cork-Barked (Ulmus parvifolia “Corticosa”) bonsai – medium size. Height: 19 inches; Width: 17 inches. Pot size 11″ X 8″ X 3.5 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 2.5 inches. This bark becomes evident after the tree reaches 8-10 years. It grew in my backyard for about 10 years, before I started the bonsai training in various training pots. This bonsai is designed in the “slanting style”, with a trunk that has a dynamic movement with lots of small curves. The lower trunk has already developed a deeply fissured, old bark. It has a great branch distribution, and the branches are not too crowded, so the tree will be easy to maintain with pruning. Some of the primary and secondary branches still have wire on them, they should set and come off by mid-summer. This tree is a very prolific grower, so the foliage pads should become significantly larger and denser this year. The red/brown pot nicely contrasts with the dark grey bark. The chinese elm is an extremely popular bonsai species, for both beginner and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. The most imporant challenge, is to keep pruning it as it grows, so that the correct proportions are not lost. Also, the energy throughout the crown should be evenly distributed. Chinese Elm, Cork-Barked (Ulmus parvifolia “Corticosa”) bonsai – medium size. Height: 23 inches; Width: 23 inches. Pot size 13″ X 11″ X 3 Pot origin: Yixing, China. Trunk diameter at the root base: 4 inches. The problem was that the upper trunk had very little taper. But I liked the lower trunk, it has a very old and mature look. So, I decided to cut of the entire top part of the trunk, and choose a branch, as the new leader. This is why one can see the sudden reduction in diameter, half-way through the height of the tree. Since the drastic re-design, the crown is developing nicely. Due to the fact that there are many branches extending from the top half of the trunk, I expect the thin upper half to gain girth in the next few years, and catch up with the lower half in about 3-4 years. At that point, it will become a spectacular tree. The final image of this bonsai should reflect a powerful trunk and a lush, spreading, dense, natural-looking crown. This tree is a very prolific grower, so the foliage pads should become significantly larger and denser every year. The red Yixing pot is a very good fit for this tree, although this powerful and old trunk could support a more decorative pot, if the owner prefers that. Chinese Elm, Cork Bark #2 (Ulmus parvifolia) bonsai medium size

Chinese elm, cork-bark variety, medium size. Height: 19 inches; Width: 19 inches. Pot size 11″ X 9″ X 2.5 Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California. Trunk diameter at the base: 3 inches. Species: Ulmus parvifolia, Popular name: Chinese elm, cork-bark variety. This is a species native to East Asia (China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam), growing up to 60 feet tall (18-20 m). An extremely popular bonsai medium, due to its versatility, small leaves, and quick response to training. I bought this tree as a young nursery stock, about 20 years ago from San Gabriel Nursery, in San Gabriel, CA. Planted in the ground for over a decade, and then trained it as a bonsai for another decade. It is a deciduous species, here in Southern California. It loses the leaves in winter, but quickly re-grows them in early spring. In very cold climates, it can be grown indoors, during winter. The branches have small inter-nodes, and the leaves are very small, when grown in bonsai pot. The bark is very corky and thick, creating the impression of great age. This is a gorgeous little tree, with balanced structure, and a light, playful appearance. The upward main branches add naturalness to the design, although the flat pads still look bonsai-ish. In order to look more natural, the pads need to be thickened and rounded, and the top part of the tree should be expanded, so that the final result is a rounded and lush apex. This is a fast-growing species, so the thickening of pads and the apex, should take no longer than a full growing season. Another great thing about this tree, is that both the front and the back views look equally good. You can see it for yourself. I had a hard time figuring out which one is the best view, when I took the pictures this morning. I re-wired the branches this past spring, but the wires should come off in about a month and a half, since this time of the year in California, the branches thicken very fast. But if the thickening is not quite as strong, then the new owner should take off the wires as soon as they start cutting into the wood, around mid-spring, next year. On a different note, if this tree will still be in my possession by next spring, by the time the wires come off, and the foliage fills out, the tree will appreciate significantly, both in appearance and value. The root-base (nebari) is very nice and strong, with a perfect structure. The tree has no scars whatsoever, and a great taper. The light-blue pot contrasts very well with the dark trunk, and the bright green foliage. Overall, this is a beautiful little tree, one or two years away from show-quality. It can be a great addition to the collection of both a beginner, as well as an advanced bonsai enthusiast. The great thing about chinese elms, is that they are suited to all levels of bonsai knowledge, due to their versatility and forgiving nature. And, as a bonus for those who live in colder climates, but like to enjoy bonsai in the comfort of their home, chinese elms don’t mind being grown indoors, as long as they get enough light.
