BONSAI TREE LITERATI CALIFORNIA JUNIPER in JAPANESE TOKONAME POT. Height: The height of the tree from the soil line to the top of the apex is 33. Nebari (Root Spread): Tree shows many exposed Roots 6. Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia, is approximately 2.25. Canopy: 16 at widest area. A literati style tree is something different from other bonsai trees that typically represent a tree style in nature. Literati is more complex, symbolic, and very strong in elegant movement as well as aesthetically pleasing. There is little doubt that it is one of the most fascinating of all styles and also one of the hardest to successfully create. Hanging in the realm between nature and vision, realism and impressionism, dream and reality, literati captures our imagination and in doing so, encompasses all that bonsai is and was meant to be. Notes on the tree. One thing that my Sensei and Bonsai Master Roy Nagatoshi has taught me and has also mastered is the use of negative space. Roy always stresses to me that in bonsai what is not there is just as important as what is there (branches). In the case of this tree, anything that was not absolutely crucial to the trees story was removed or jinned. The photographs of the tree show a bone white colored deadwood that creates a good contrast to the tan bark of the trunk. Overall, the composition of this California juniper (Juniperus Californica) shows a tree that has weathered the tough times and has emerged as something more beautiful because of it. The elegant curvature of the trunk and its low branches gives one the impression of a tree that has spent its entire life by the edge of a cliff. The beautiful tree was collected over ten years ago in a place known as Juniper Hills, CA. Throughout the years of collecting trees I have found that there are basically three types of Junipers one can collect- little young trees, big old trees and small, but old trees. The little old trees are the rarest and the hardest to find for bonsai. The reason the California juniper is so coveted is partly due to the spectacular deadwood that the tree can show. However, in order for the tree to acquire the beautiful deadwood can only be done through time. One of the major problems with a tree showing good deadwood is that it normally comes in a big size tree because of the time requirement. In this case you see a tree that has amazing deadwood, but is smaller than most trees at this stage. In my opinion that makes this tree even more valuable than a bigger tree. Complementing the elegant stature of the trunk as well as the entire composition is a round ceramic Japanese Tokoname bonsai pot (12×5). The tree can easily fit into a smaller pot, but we decided to put it into a deeper pot to encourage a stronger root growth that will facilitate in developing a fuller canopy. On a side note. Ive noticed that not too many sellers talk or write about things that should be done after you receive your tree so I will give you my two cents worth. When you receive your tree unpack it carefully. Cut the tape and plastic wrap from the pot and the branches if applicable. Secondly give the tree a good watering and then put the tree in a partially shaded spot for a few days to allow it to adjust. This tree grows very quickly and is incredibly thorny, please be advised. It does make up for that aspect by producing super small leaflets. Nice tree with okay taper and awesome branching. This bougainville is very well established and has been in training for over two years. All the primary branching has been wired and is in place. Now this tree needs to mature and develop finer ramification. I really admire the unique trunk shape for a boungainvillea. This tree is a fine addition to any collection. Measurements: Height: 16″ Width: 16″ Trunk Diameter: 7″ (widest point) Nebari (root spread): 8″. Ships semi bare root- the rootball is securely plastic wrapped. General Bougainvillea is an extremely drought tolerant flowering vine. Though bougainvillea is often seen with a large self supporting trunk in a bonsai setting its true nature is to climb over and prick! Anything in its path. In warm climates Bougainvillea is a prolific grower, one at the Thomas Edison home in Ft. Myers has totally overtaken a 40′ pine. Bougainvillea leaves reduce readily and because the colored part of the flower is actually a modified leaf known as a bract the nodes between the flowers can be reduced with training. Bougainvillea can take total defoliation or a 80% root pruning with no problem given temperatures are nice and hot. Finally, the trick to get bougainvillea to bloom the best is to keep them dry. BONSAI TREE BIG OLD INFORMAL UPRIGHT BOXWOOD in OLD TOKONAME POT. We realize that the summer season has already reached many parts of the U. Nebari (Root Spread): Tree has several exposed Roots measuring 8. Height: Tree height from the soil line to the top of the apex is 25. Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia, is approximately 3.5 inches. Canopy: The triangular canopy spreads 28 inches across. I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. Many of the trees I sell are still a work in progress, but this Old Boxwood that is well disguised as an old Oak tree is a finished tree that is now show ready. The tree represents some of the best material I have to offer. I have enjoyed watching this tree grow and mature into the fine bonsai specimen that you see today. Most of the masterpiece bonsai trees that I own such as this Boxwood were started by the original first generation Japanese American bonsai masters that I have studied under here in the west coast. This tree in particular, has been worked several times, over the past years by experience bonsai masters to bring to fruition. By nature, Informal upright trees give an impression of enduring power and with the grandeur of the boxwood, the trees size and composition add to an already impressive bonsai. There is a vestige of survival and time in this tree that the viewer can admire for hours at a time. The resilient ability of the boxwood is one of the many reasons why I love this plant, but as previously mentioned it has taken many years for this tree to get to its present size and shape. Because of the slow growth rate in the trunk, branch, and foliage area this tree has been designed and redesigned numerous times throughout its life. On that note, I find that the branch structure of this tree works well with this mature bonsai. Along with the thick branches, the massive trunk adds a realistic harmony to this venerable giant. Complementing the impressive trunk as well as the entire composition is an old rectangular Japanese Tokoname ceramic bonsai pot (16 ¾x12 ½x5). Although most of the quality Japanese pottery bears an incision or mark made by the artist or craftsman, a few makers do not mark the item thereby making the pot itself their signature. In Japan this pot is known as a “non-kamajirushi, ” which means non-marked. The old aquamarine greenish/blue pot is also inundated with a strong patina that is a testament to the pots old age.
