Bonsai Boys Flowering Crabapple Malus Sargenti. Flowering crabapples are one of the best flowering trees for bonsai. They produce beautiful white, fragrant flowers covering the entire tree in early spring before the foliage appears. The foliage is really small and lobed. Little green pomes (apples) appear in summer, derived from the enlargement of the entire flower receptacle which becomes fleshy. The fruit ripens to all different colors in the fall when the foliage begins to turn to shades of yellow, orange and red. Winter brings a nice twiggy skeletal outline punctuated by the fruit which persists throughout the winter. They are easy to grow and quite pest and disease resistant. Available 12 months a year. Multiple trunk style that mimics what you would normally see from an apple tree. It is currently potted in a Japanese Tokoname pot signed Yamaaki, in akadama. This tree is currently flowering and will for the next week or so. The blossoms are a beautiful pink, and the fruit is less than the size of a dime and a brilliant red color. This is raw material, great for someone who doesn’t mind taking a little time to develop them for bonsai. This is also the largest tree in the group. The crabs were named varieties, though the tags were lost and i’m not sure of the name of the exact variety. They could be indian magic. The blooms are most likely a shade of pink and the fruit should be small. They are still dormant but the buds are starting to swell. The trees should be 6-7 years old. This particular tree is 8 inches tall with a trunk that is 1 and 3/4 inches thick right above the roots. It has a partial hollow trunk that you could carve. These crabs will be sent virtually bare-root. Plant them in the ground on arrival or in a training pot. If you are potting them, use at least a 2 gallon pot. Flowering crabapples are deciduous and must be grown outdoors. They are generally hardy from zones 3 to 8. They are noted as an easy-to-grow flowering and fruiting bonsai subject. They become twiggy and are very fast-growing. I will send a care sheet with the tree. Height: 22 from soil line. Trunk diameter: 1.5 at widest point! This is something you don’t see every day! I absolutely love hawthorn, but they are so darn difficult to find here in the states. This tree is quite tall, so it could either be worked with at this height, or be airlayered to create two or more trees!


The movement is great throughout, so airlayering would be my choice, as you could get a very nice shohin tree out of it as well. This species is very popular in europe and often mentioned in harry harrington’s book look him up, he has some very nice trees! The bark on this one is incredible, old and flaky!

This should make a spectacular bonsai in no time! As always, feel free to ask any questions you may have. School is finally out for summer and i’m back in action! Hardy, adaptable, easy to grow, fast growth, bonsai, espalier, showy, fragrant flowers, edible fruits, attracts birds, wildlife food/shelter, cold, drought and wind tolerant. Best grown in loamy, medium moisture, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils. Promptly remove root suckers to control spread.
Responds well to pruning and may be used as a hedge plant. The fruit can be eaten fresh, or used to make cider, soft drinks, juice, and vinegars. Pectine is a valuable by-product of cider. The fruit is excellent for jams and jellies. The wood is hard and strong and used for quality tool handles and firewood.

Scarify: soak in water for 24 hours. Stratify: cold 30-75 days, 40 degrees f in a moist medium (not wet). Germination: sow 1/4 deep, keep moist (not wet).

Height: 9 from soil line. Pot: blue glaze square cascade. This is an older tree of mine that is well established in its little cascade pot. I have been working on this tree for the last 4 years, starting from a small uninteresting cutting.
It has progressed, though slowly, over the years to what you see now. As of last year it started flowering and producing actual cherries! This tree has been a joy to watch bloom, and i hope its new owner will get a chance to see some blossoms this year. As always, feel free to ask any questions you may have. I obtained these at a rural king store a few years ago when they had them on late-spring clearance. They were 5-6 feet tall trees intended for landscape use and i stubbed them off to develop them as bonsai. I’m not sure which cultivar they are, could be indian magic or cardinal. The flowers will be a shade of pink in any case. Please note that these plants are raw material and great for someone who doesn’t mind taking some time to develop them into a finished bonsai. You may want to re-plant them in the ground or in at least a 3 gallon or larger training pot. Growing trees in the ground is the fastest way to develop a thick trunk and more vigorous branching.

These are my largest crabapples and probably the last of this size, at least for awhile. I’m going to concentrate on growing bonsai starters suited for the smaller, “shohin” style. This particular tree is 12 inches tall with a trunk that is almost 1 and 3/4 inches thick right above the soil line. The root mass is 3 inches deep. I dug the tree last week, reducing the top and roots.

It is ready for you to refine to your liking. The tree will be sent as shown, out of the ground with most of the soil removed. If the weather in your area will be too cold or otherwise not suitable for working on the tree, just keep it in a protected spot outside and cover the root mass with leaves or mulch until the weather breaks. The crabapple is a deciduous species that must be grown outdoors. It is hardy to zone 4. A great subject for flowering and fruiting bonsai.

This flowering crabapple is 13 1/2″ tall x 12″ wide x 11 deep. An informal upright styling, good branching and interesting surface roots are it’s main features. It was recently fully wired and is established in a nursery pot. The tree has yet to flower but a tree from the same seedling batch recently showed red flowers.
