The proportions on this California Juniper grafted with Shimpaku are very attractive; in fact, I would say that they are ideal! The reason many graft the beautiful Shimpaku foliage onto California Junipers is due to the notorious slow growth of the Shimpaku. The wonderful thing about this tree is that you do not have to suffer through the slow growing process, which is the only downfall of owning a Shimpaku juniper. The Shimpaku, which the Japanese have recognized as one of the best trees for bonsai, has an amazing emerald green condensed scale foliage that is a pleasure to work with. We collected this beautiful specimen several years ago in a place known as Juniper Hills, which is located in the foothills on the north slope of the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California. Before the tree was grafted with Kishu Shimpaku foliage it was a small, but old California Juniper. Throughout my collecting years I have found that there are basically three types of Junipers one can collect. Big old junipers, small old junipers, and finally small young trees. The small, but old California junipers are the rarest and the one’s we seek for bonsai. I initially planned on keeping the tree’s original foliage, but after further consideration I decided that it would be better suited with Shimpaku foliage. Although California juniper foliage looks fine on native stock, many bonsai artist opt to graft with Shimpaku foliage because of its beautiful soft condensed foliage. The actual graft work was started over two years ago so the graft is very well established. The grafting technique that was used was a method known as an “Approach” graft. At the moment the tree shows both native foliage and the grafted Kishu Shimpaku foliage, but with time the shimpaku foliage will take over. Eventually the only sign that a graft took place is the distinct difference between the California juniper and the Shimpaku bark, which can be seen in the photographs.
