The rare plant first appeared in a Florida nursery in the early 1960s. At first it was thought to have some sort of fungal disease. A heavy application of pesticide nearly eradicated the problem by killing most of the plants. Fortunately, one survived before the nursery went out of business and the plant made its way to the West Coast. This tree was grown here in Southern California by a local artist who accidentally discovered this mutation many years ago and has been growing them ever since.
