This pot was made Ikkou. Hes a very long time and famous tokoname Potter. His father and mother were (are) very well known and respected potters. I bought this pot at Meifu Ten, a regional show in Negoya Japan during the month of January. I bought it in 2019 from a vender at the show when I attended. Its got a chip right above one of the feet. I think its a chip but could also be a flaw when it was made. Either way an old make from him, the patina, clay body, and stamp size and style are all from days past. The vender said it was no less than 30 years old. Early works by this Author. Pot size, in inches. This pot was made by the deceased Heian kosen. A prolific Kyoto based potter. He made a small amount of Suibans and they are Glazed very nicely. They do have some issues; warping and firing cracks but no damage by man (drops-cracks or chips). Sort of rare piece by the man. Please see the pics closely. Bonsai Japanese coral bark maple shohin show ready 23yrs A+++ best seen. This little gem is in a stamped green Hatorri tokoname pot that is, 8 inches by 3.25 inch hight. The tree is 11 inches from the soil line and is 8………. It has a massive massive trunk that is 2, see photos. It is one of the first trees I ever grafted way back when. The foliage come out a beautiful light green with a reddish fire on the edges of the leafs, in the fall it ranges colors from tan yellow to red. As can be seen the structure is amazing , achieve from decades of wiring, pinching and trimming. It with out a doubt has the best structure I have ever seen, just meticulous. There is such age to it the graft can no longer be seen making it very desirable. The branches have a wonderful light pinkish red coral color which is awesome to see in winter. I know the new owner will get the same gratification out of this prize tree that I have. Cork elm bonsai stock. Height – 6 inch. Canopy width – 5 inch. Diameter – 1 1/4 inch (measured below lowest branch). Flare at soil level – 1 3/4 inch. Features – This is a nice twisted cork elm. This tree was twisted with wire as a sapling and placed into the field. You can see there is still a piece of wire showing in the photo. This tree is nicely corked. The tree has nice taper and flare at the soil level. The cork elm is a rapid grower and will fill in quickly. This tree would make a nice candidate for a shohin size bonsai. Olive bonsai (Olea europaea) – Small-leaf variety. Height: 11 inches; Width: 11 inches. Pot size 8″ X 2″ Round; Pot origin: Dick Ryerson, California potter. Trunk diameter at the base: 5 inches. Age: over 40 years; In training for 15 years. This is a medierranean tree, from Europe, but also Middle East and South Africa. California is its adopted home, but it is very prevalent around here. As a bonsai, it is very common in Calfornia, but they are usually created from old stumps. The uniqueness of this little tree, is that it was grown in a nursery pot from the beginning, and for a very long time. It has tiny leaves and even smaller internodes. This variety is highly sought after among bonsai enthusiasts, because of the superior quality of the leaves and small internodes. It was grown in a nursery pot, for many decades. I trained it for the first eleven years, as a much taller tree. But for some reason, I didn’t like the design, because I could not reconcile the massive trunk base with the rest of the tree. Then, one day, about 4 years ago, I had a revelation that completely changed the look of this tree. I cut off half of the trunk, and used a side branch as the trunk, to create a much smaller tree. And from then on, I loved the direction it was going. Today, it looks like a very promising bonsai. Some branches are still wired, but with olives, the wire shouldn’t stay on for more than 3-4 months. So, they should all come off this fall. Some call it a “Sumo-style” tree, because the massive trunk base. Sumo trees are supposed to create the impression of great age. Also, the lower trunk has some deadwood (shari) which adds character and interest. The lower trunk is the focal point of the design. A week ago I planted it into this Dick Ryerson pot, and it’s a perfect match. I see too often olives planted into dull pots, instead of colorful ones. I love how this pot brightens up the whole image and makes the tree look much bigger than it is. In the future, the foliage needs to become fuller and rounder. All you have to do, is to cut back the new shoots to the first pair of leaves, and the foliage will double in about two years. It’s a prolific grower.
